Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie concert hall, completed in 2017, rises 110 metres above the River Elbe and has become one of Europe's most recognisable modern landmarks. Germany's second-largest city is a port metropolis where maritime heritage meets creative energy. Stroll through the Speicherstadt, the world's largest warehouse district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then cross into HafenCity to see how old docklands have been reimagined. The Miniatur Wunderland, the planet's biggest model railway exhibition, draws visitors of all ages, while Planten un Blomen park offers peaceful green space right in the city centre. Art lovers can spend hours at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, home to works spanning seven centuries. Lübeck, famous for its marzipan and medieval old town, sits just 65 km to the north-east, and the Lüneburger Heide nature reserve begins roughly 80 km to the south — both make excellent day trips. Hamburg's flat terrain and well-maintained roads make it easy to navigate in a larger vehicle, and the network of motorways radiating from the city means you can head to the coast or countryside without fuss. With Yescapa, you hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners, giving you insider tips on the best routes and a more personal start to your trip. Whether you are planning a weekend escape along the Elbe or a longer tour of northern Germany, Hamburg is a superb base.
Hamburg is wonderful from May to September, when long daylight hours let you make the most of the waterfront and parks. The Hafengeburtstag, the world's largest port festival, takes place each May and fills the harbour with tall ships and live music. In December, Hamburg's famous Christmas markets — including the Roncalli market at the Rathaus — create a magical atmosphere for a winter campervan trip. Book your motorhome through Yescapa early for summer, as it is the most popular season for touring northern Germany. Shoulder months like April and October offer quieter roads and great availability for hire.
Hamburg is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 65 km north-east from Hamburg to Lübeck, a UNESCO-listed city famed for its Holstentor gate and Niederegger marzipan house. Allow 1–4 days to explore the Altstadt and the European Hansemuseum. Campervan-friendly parking is available near the old town.
Drive 80 km south from Hamburg to the charming salt town of Lüneburg. Wander the crooked houses on Am Sande square and visit the German Salt Museum. Spend 2–4 days and extend into the Lüneburger Heide, where motorhome stopovers dot the heathland.
Travel 150 km north-west from Hamburg to the island of Sylt, loaded onto the Autozug shuttle from Niebüll. Enjoy 3–6 days exploring the red cliffs at Morsum and the beaches of Kampen. Book campsite pitches ahead during summer for your campervan.
Follow the Elbe 180 km west from Hamburg to Cuxhaven, where the river meets the North Sea. Walk the Wadden Sea mudflats at low tide and visit the Kugelbake landmark. A 3–6 day trip suits well, with several motorhome stopovers along the coastal route.
Cover 290 km south-east from Hamburg to Berlin via the A24 motorway. Stop at Schwerin to see its fairy-tale lakeside castle, then continue to the capital for the Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island. Allow 5–8 days and use well-equipped campervan sites in both cities.
Head 350 km south from Hamburg into the Harz Mountains. Ride the Brockenbahn steam train to the summit and hike the trails around Wernigerode. Plan 5–8 days to enjoy the forests and historic towns, with plenty of motorhome-friendly aires along the way.

Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower and toilet blocks, fresh-water supply, and waste-disposal facilities, so you can recharge comfortably between days of exploring Hamburg.
Hamburg has several dedicated motorhome parking areas where you can stop conveniently. Overnight parking in a campervan or motorhome is generally permitted at designated Stellplätze but not on public streets within the city. Always check signage for height and length restrictions before parking, and arrive early during peak season to secure a spot.
Kevin was so helpful helping John and I embark on our first campervan journey with our dogs travelling the length of France in his lovely converted Boxer van we have all come to love as ''Olive''. The first trip of many our experience was overwhelmingly good. So many amazing places to stop at and amazing views from Blue Lakes , Vast Gorges and amazing views from High Mountain Passes, Olive got us there ! Then when we were all parked up she offered us such a lovely comfy place to spend the night. With mosquito nets and an ambient cooling system in the cab, we took some fans to cope with the ' above 40 degree at times, temperatures but the dogs and us were absolutely fine.. Olive's solar powered appliances really do work all day and through the night. Kevin was an amazing host - even though we 'lost ' his fuel tank cap! Don't ask us how! Id thoroughly recommend Olive to anyone . She is a lovely van and Kevin a great host.
Amazing renters ) Happy vacation in Lanzerote and hopefully see you soon again )
Miguel was the perfect person to rent a camper van from. The van had everything you could wish for. He was kind, extremely helpful and the test drive I requested really assisted me. . All the paperwork and communication was highly efficient and very fair. No issues at all. As a single female in my 60s I could not recommend a better person.
My partner and I have been on van trips before, but only borrowing friend's vans in the UK. This was our first time renting a van abroad, first time using Yescapa and first time exploring the Picos de Europa. Overall it was a super smooth experience and enabled us to have one of the best holidays ever - so we would fully recommend! Firstly, the booking experience. We were visiting during the eclipse and so we were wary that everything was getting booked up. We stumbled upon Yescapa and this van, then the booking experience was pretty simple so it kind of felt too good to be true. Picking up the van was a doddle, with all the instructions sent clearly over WhatsApp. This meant we felt comfortable hitting the ground running. Secondly, the van was absolutely perfect for our holiday. The shower out the back was perfect for cooling down and cleaning off after runs. The camp stove worked great for making porridge in the morning, and we were grateful for the included chairs - especially when it came to watching the eclipse. We found that the fridge tended to heat the cabin when it was running which meant it worked quite well for helping control the temperature i.e. we'd leave the fridge running if there was a cold night due. Finally, thank you to Safira the host for letting us use the van for our wonderful trip. She was very quick to respond to any questions, and super lovely in helping us out during pick-up and drop-off.
We had a lovely few days in France in the motorhome. We picked up about 30 minutes from Calais which was very convenient for the ferry. The van had everything we needed and we had a great time visiting the Normandy beaches and D day sites.
We had the best experience with this campervan and were so sad when it was time to hand it back! We had it for 3 nights during peak summer at a really reasonable price, and it was absolutely perfect for our little adventure. The host was fantastic and always replied incredibly quickly whenever we had a question. The van itself had everything we could possibly need and more. You can really tell that the owner has thought about all the little details — from salt and pepper, coffee and tea, to plenty of kitchenware and even a coffee machine! The bed was super comfortable and really easy to assemble, and the fan worked brilliantly, which was definitely appreciated during the summer heat. We honestly loved every minute of van life and were genuinely sad to leave. Thank you for helping make our trip so special — we would definitely recommend this campervan to anyone looking for an amazing adventure!
