Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Sicily

Sicily — a region worth exploring

Sicily's coastline stretches for over 1,600 km, making it the largest island in the Mediterranean and one of the most rewarding destinations to explore by road. From the ancient Greek temples at Agrigento's Valle dei Templi to the towering presence of Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, the island packs centuries of history into every corner. The drive from Palermo to Catania covers roughly 210 km along the A19 motorway, crossing the mountainous interior, while the coastal route from Syracuse to Taormina runs about 110 km along the Ionian shore. You can wander through the baroque streets of Noto, sample street food at Palermo's Ballarò market, or park up beside the turquoise waters of the Riserva dello Zingaro nature reserve. The road network is well suited to both campervans and larger motorhomes, with a mix of motorways, winding coastal roads, and quieter inland routes through hilltop towns. Sicily's varied terrain — from sandy beaches to volcanic highlands — means every day on the road brings something different. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across the island, giving you access to a wide choice of vehicles based in Palermo, Catania, Trapani, and beyond. This peer-to-peer approach often means more flexible pick-up arrangements and genuine local tips to help you get the most out of your Sicilian road trip.

Best time to visit

Sicily is ideal for a campervan trip from April through to October, with spring and early autumn offering comfortable temperatures and quieter roads. The Festa di Sant'Agata in Catania each February is one of Italy's largest religious festivals, while the Cous Cous Fest in San Vito Lo Capo every September celebrates the island's culinary crossroads. Summer is peak season, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa well ahead secures the best choice and rates from local owners. Shoulder months like May and October bring warm weather, open campsites, and lower hire prices — perfect for a relaxed motorhome tour of the island.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Sicily

Sicily's motorway network includes the A19 (Palermo–Catania), A20 (Palermo–Messina), and A18 (Messina–Catania). Tolls apply on some sections, payable by cash or card at booths. The general speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 100 km/h. Coastal and inland roads can be narrow and winding, so allow extra time if you are driving a larger vehicle. Rest areas with basic facilities appear regularly along the main routes, and fuel stations are widely available in towns.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.
