Saxony's Elbe Sandstone Mountains contain over 1,100 free-standing rock formations, making the region one of the most distinctive climbing and hiking landscapes in all of Europe. From the cobbled streets of Dresden's Neustadt quarter to the sprawling waterways of the Leipzig Lake District, Saxony packs an extraordinary range of experiences into a compact area. Dresden to Leipzig is roughly 120 km, while the drive from Leipzig south to the Czech border near Oberwiesenthal covers around 150 km — both distances that feel perfectly suited to a campervan adventure. You can explore the Bastei Bridge, perched 194 metres above the Elbe, then head west to Meissen, famous for its porcelain manufactory founded in 1710. Further south, the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) offer forested ridgelines and traditional craft villages, while Görlitz — Germany's easternmost city — rewards you with one of the best-preserved medieval townscapes in the country. Roads throughout Saxony are well maintained and generally easy to navigate in larger vehicles, though some routes through Saxon Switzerland wind through narrow river valleys that add to the sense of adventure. With Yescapa, you hire your motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across Saxony, giving you the flexibility to collect a vehicle in Dresden, Leipzig, or Chemnitz and set off at your own pace. The peer-to-peer model means a wider choice of vehicles and often friendlier prices than traditional hire companies.
May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Saxony, with long daylight hours and comfortable temperatures for outdoor exploring. The Dresden Music Festival runs each May and June, filling the city with concerts in remarkable venues, while the Leipzig Christmas Market — one of Germany's oldest, dating back to 1458 — transforms the city centre from late November. Summer is peak season, so booking your Yescapa hire early ensures the best selection of vehicles from local owners. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and golden colours across the Ore Mountains, ideal if you prefer a more relaxed pace.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This 150 km loop from Leipzig winds through the reclaimed lakes of Cospudener See and Markkleeberger See before reaching Altenburg's Renaissance castle. Ideal for campervans, with lakeside stopovers and flat, easy roads throughout. Allow 3–5 days to swim, cycle, and unwind.
Follow 280 km of historic mining heritage from Freiberg to Annaberg-Buchholz and on to Oberwiesenthal, Saxony's highest town. The route passes UNESCO-listed mining landscapes and traditional craft workshops. Motorhomes handle the well-graded mountain roads comfortably over 5–8 days.
Covering 350 km across eastern Saxony, this route links Bautzen's mustard-coloured old town with Görlitz on the Polish border and the Zittau Mountains. You pass through Sorbian cultural villages and open heathland. Plan 5–8 days and look out for well-signed campervan stopovers along the way.
A compact 180 km circuit from Dresden through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, taking in the Bastei Bridge and the fortress of Königstein. Winding valley roads suit smaller campervans best. Spend 3–6 days hiking table-top mountains and paddling the Elbe.
This 520 km route connects Saxony's three largest cities — Leipzig, Chemnitz, and Dresden — with detours into the Ore Mountains and Saxon Switzerland. Campsites are plentiful, and the mix of motorway and scenic back roads suits motorhomes of all sizes. Allow 7–11 days for the full experience.
At 600 km, this cross-border loop pairs Saxony's highlights with northern Bohemia, passing through Dresden, Bad Schandau, and into Český Krumlov before returning via the Ore Mountains. A valid vignette is needed for Czech motorways. Set aside 10–15 days for a thorough campervan exploration.

Saxony offers a good spread of campsites, from riverside pitches in the Elbe valley to forested spots high in the Ore Mountains. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated motorhome service points for fresh water and waste disposal. Whether you are touring Saxony in a compact campervan or a larger motorhome, you will find well-equipped facilities and helpful on-site staff across the region.
Germany's motorways (Autobahnen) are toll-free for campervans and motorhomes under 7.5 tonnes, so you can travel Saxony's A4, A9, and A14 without extra cost. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must observe a speed limit of 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on rural roads. Saxony's main routes are well surfaced, though some secondary roads through Saxon Switzerland and the Ore Mountains are narrower and include gradients — take your time and enjoy the scenery. Rest areas with motorhome-friendly parking and service points appear regularly along the major corridors.
We had a fantastic experience hiring this campervan! It was very clean, well maintained and exactly as pictured. Alberto, the owner, was incredibly friendly and helpful, and was always happy to answer any questions we had. The campervan was perfect for the three people travelling in our party and had everything we needed for a comfortable trip. The heating, hot water and electricity all worked perfectly, and having a cooker and fridge meant we could easily prepare meals and store food. We would highly recommend this campervan to anyone looking for a trip away, and wouldn’t hesitate to hire it again. Thank you Alberto!
Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️
Zeben was the most amazing and helpful host, always there if needed. The van has the perfect setup and it’s the best way to spend time on the island. Could not recommend more!
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
