Why choose Dresden for your road trip

Dresden — a city worth exploring

Dresden's Frauenkirche, rebuilt stone by stone after its wartime destruction and reconsecrated in 2005, stands as one of Europe's most remarkable feats of architectural restoration. The city sits along the Elbe River, where baroque landmarks line the waterfront in a stretch known as the Brühlsche Terrasse, often called the "Balcony of Europe." You can wander through the Zwinger Palace and its Old Masters Picture Gallery, home to Raphael's Sistine Madonna, or explore the Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault), one of the oldest and richest treasure collections on the continent. Across the river, the Neustadt quarter offers independent shops, street art, and a lively café scene. For a change of pace, the Großer Garten park provides over 147 hectares of green space right in the city centre. Saxon Switzerland National Park lies just 35 km to the south-east, with dramatic sandstone formations ideal for day trips, while the porcelain town of Meissen is only 25 km to the north-west. Dresden's riverside roads and well-maintained routes into the surrounding countryside make it a superb base for exploring Saxony by campervan or motorhome. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners in and around Dresden, giving you the flexibility to pick up a vehicle close to where your adventure begins and set off at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Dresden is wonderful to visit from late spring through to autumn. The Dresdner Musikfestspiele, a prestigious music festival, runs through May and June, filling the city's grand venues with world-class performances. In December, the Striezelmarkt — one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets, dating back to 1434 — transforms the Altmarkt square. Summer is the busiest season, so booking your campervan through Yescapa early lets you secure the best choice from local owners at competitive peer-to-peer prices. Autumn brings quieter roads and golden colours along the Elbe, perfect for a motorhome tour into Saxon Switzerland.

We rented the van for almost 3 weeks and we had a lovely time exploring Spain. The van has everything we needed and working properly. It’s spacious and comfortable for two to sleep. We were a bit worried about the heatwave the country was having and Jeremie managed to buy a double fan for us to sleep, which we highly appreciated. He is very friendly and good with communicating. The van runs smoothly, we just had a message on the screen to top up the oil (which was easy enough to stop at the petrol station and buy one - with Jeremie instructions we were able to do it). We really recommend renting his van for your adventure. ☺️

It was a genuine pleasure travelling in Álvaro’s campervan. Not only was it well maintained and fully equipped, but Álvaro also proved to be an exceptional host—friendly, responsive, and always willing to help. His support played a key role in ensuring that the trip went as smoothly as possible. I would recommend him without hesitation and sincerely hope to have the opportunity to repeat the experience. Thank you very much for everything!
