Why choose Porto for your road trip

Porto — a city worth exploring

Porto's iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, a double-deck iron arch spanning 172 metres across the Douro River, has connected the city's upper and lower levels since 1886. Wander through the Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where colourful townhouses line the waterfront, or explore the Livraria Lello, one of the oldest bookshops in Portugal, with its striking neo-Gothic interior. The Clérigos Tower offers panoramic views after a climb of 240 steps, while the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art sits within 18 hectares of landscaped gardens on the western side of the city. For a taste of local tradition, visit the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river. Braga lies roughly 55 km to the north-east, and the golden beaches of Costa Nova are about 75 km south, making Porto an ideal base for day trips by campervan. The city's compact historic centre is best explored on foot, but the surrounding coastline and river valleys reward those who set off in a motorhome. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners who know the region, giving you insider tips on routes, overnight spots and the best places to park. Whether you are heading along the Atlantic coast or inland through the Douro vineyards, a campervan from Porto puts you right at the heart of northern Portugal's most rewarding landscapes.

Best time to visit

Porto is wonderful year-round, though late spring and early autumn bring comfortable temperatures ideal for campervan touring. June hosts the Festa de São João, Porto's biggest street celebration, filling the city with music, grilled sardines and paper lanterns. September's cooler days are perfect for exploring the Douro Valley grape harvest. Book your motorhome through Yescapa ahead of summer to secure the best choice from local owners, and enjoy quieter campsites along the coast during shoulder months. Winter brings a lively cultural calendar and fewer crowds at Porto's top attractions.

We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!

We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.

We had a great experience hiring this motorhome. Everything went smoothly and we had absolutely zero issues throughout our trip. Fernando kept us informed about everything from the beginning and was very friendly and helpful. He was also very flexible with both the pickup and drop-off times, which made everything much easier. The location is perfect, especially if you're arriving via Prague Airport. We travelled all the way to Hungary and back to Poland, staying at several off-grid locations along the way. We had an amazing time at Lake Balaton in Hungary and also loved our stay at the Pod Opaleńcem campsite in Świeradów-Zdrój, Poland. We would definitely recommend this motorhome hire and would happily rent from Fernando again!
