Why choose Portland for your road trip

Portland — a city worth exploring

Portland's iconic Powell's City of Books occupies an entire city block, making it the largest independent bookshop in the world. This creative, eco-conscious city in Oregon sits at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, offering easy access to forests, waterfalls and volcanic peaks. Explore the International Rose Test Garden, home to over 10,000 rose bushes across 1.8 hectares in Washington Park. Wander through the Portland Japanese Garden, widely regarded as one of the most authentic outside Japan. Cross the Willamette on the Tilikum Crossing, the first major bridge in the United States built exclusively for public transport, cyclists and pedestrians. For science fans, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) sits along the river's east bank with hands-on exhibits and a planetarium. Mount Hood, Oregon's tallest peak, rises just 95 km to the east, while the dramatic Oregon Coast at Astoria is roughly 80 km to the north-west. Portland's grid-style streets and well-signed motorways make it straightforward to navigate in a larger vehicle, and the surrounding Columbia River Gorge provides spectacular driving with plenty of pull-offs for photos. With Yescapa, you hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners, giving you insider tips on the best routes and neighbourhood food carts before you even hit the road.

Best time to visit

Portland shines from June to September, when warm, dry days make it ideal for campervan touring along the coast and into the Cascades. The Portland Rose Festival runs throughout June with parades, dragon boat races and live music across the city. In July, the Oregon Brewers Festival draws craft-beer lovers to Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Book your motorhome early for summer — it is the most popular season. Spring and autumn bring quieter campsites and lower hire prices through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, plus colourful foliage along the Columbia River Gorge in October.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.

We hired Trina for 5 nights earlier this July. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the island. Jandro was incredibly helpful, always on hand before and during the trip to answer any questions which really helped us navigate the island and enjoy our trip. The vehicle was fantastic, an incredible experience to drive. All the amenities were brilliant as well. I would highly recommend using Jandro and one of his vans for a fantastic Mallorca experience!

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.
