Why choose Madrid for your road trip

Madrid — a city worth exploring

Madrid's Royal Palace contains 3,418 rooms, making it the largest functioning royal palace in Europe by floor area. The city sits on a high plateau at around 650 metres above sea level, giving it one of the most distinctive climates of any European capital. From the grand Prado Museum and the sprawling Retiro Park to the buzzing Mercado de San Miguel, Madrid rewards those who take their time. Art lovers can follow the so-called Golden Triangle of Art, linking the Prado, the Museo Reina Sofía, and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza along the Paseo del Prado. Toledo lies just 72 km to the south, while the historic aqueduct city of Segovia is 91 km to the north-west — both make brilliant day trips in a campervan. The Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range borders the city to the north, offering fresh air and scenic driving routes through pine forests and granite peaks. Madrid's wide ring roads and well-signed motorways make it straightforward to navigate in a motorhome, and once you leave the centre, open roads stretch in every direction. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners across the Madrid region, which means flexible pick-up points and genuine tips on where to go. Whether you plan to explore the capital's tapas bars or use it as a launchpad for a longer road trip through central Spain, Madrid is a fantastic place to start.

Best time to visit

Madrid enjoys long, warm seasons that suit campervan travel from spring right through to autumn. May is ideal — the Fiestas de San Isidro fill the city with open-air concerts, processions, and food stalls around the Pradera de San Isidro. September and October bring comfortable driving temperatures and fewer crowds at campsites near the Sierra de Guadarrama. Summer is the most popular period, so booking your motorhome early on Yescapa helps you lock in the best choice from local owners. Winter in Madrid is mild compared with northern Europe, and the Christmas lights along Gran Vía are well worth a visit.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a motorhome or campervan in central Madrid requires some planning, as many underground car parks have height restrictions of around 2 metres. Large vehicles are best parked at dedicated surface car parks on the outskirts, where you can connect to the Metro or commuter rail. Overnight sleeping in a parked vehicle on public roads is not permitted within the city. Always check signage for weight and height limits before entering any facility.

  • Parking Disuasorio Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, 7km east — Large open-air deterrent car park beside the Cívitas Metropolitano stadium. No height barrier, free on match-free days, and connected to the city via Metro line 7.
  • Parking Príncipe Pío, 2km west — Surface and covered parking near the Príncipe Pío transport hub. Check height clearance for covered sections; the open-air area suits taller vehicles. Direct Metro and Cercanías access.
  • Parking Feria de Madrid (IFEMA), 9km northeast — Expansive car park at the IFEMA exhibition grounds in the north-east of the city. Ample space for large vehicles outside event days, with Metro line 8 linking to the centre.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Madrid

Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.

We rented Jorge’s lovely caravan for four days as a mother and daughter trip to celebrate a 55th birthday. It was our first caravan experience, and we honestly loved it! Jorge offers several convenient extras for a small fee, including airport transfers, cleaning. Despite our late-night flight from London, he met us on arrival, gave us a thorough tour of the caravan, and even suggested we record it on our phones, which proved very helpful. A bottle of cold water waiting in the fridge was such a thoughtful touch. After arriving at 1 am in 34°C heat with no open shops nearby, it was a huge relief. We had a small issue with the fridge and also opening the water refill cap, but Jorge happily helped us over a video call. We never felt abandoned - he was always kind, responsive, and professional. The caravan is practical, comfortable, and well-equipped with everything we needed. Our deposit was also returned promptly. Thank you, Jorge, for making our first caravan holiday such a great experience and sorry about the hard to reach sauce spillage again!

This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!
