Loire-Atlantique sits where the Loire estuary meets the Atlantic coast, giving you over 130 kilometres of shoreline stretching from the resort town of La Baule to the fishing port of Le Croisic. The département is home to Nantes, a city whose Machines de l'Île attraction — featuring a 12-metre-tall mechanical elephant — draws over 700,000 visitors each year. From Nantes, it is roughly 80 km west to the medieval walled town of Guérande, famous for its hand-harvested salt marshes, and about 60 km south to the harbour at Pornic, where a 13th-century castle overlooks the old port. Inland, the Brière Regional Natural Park covers 490 square kilometres of marshland, best explored by flat-bottomed boat or on foot along its network of raised paths. The landscape is overwhelmingly flat and well-suited to larger vehicles, with wide departmental roads linking coastal stops to vineyard country around Clisson, where Italianate architecture lines the banks of the Sèvre Nantaise. Loire-Atlantique rewards slow travel — a campervan lets you wake up beside the ocean one morning and among Muscadet vines the next. With Yescapa, you hire your motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across the département, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit everything from a couple's weekend to a family fortnight.
Loire-Atlantique enjoys a mild oceanic climate, making May to October ideal for a campervan trip. June is particularly rewarding: the Voyage à Nantes festival launches in late June and transforms the city with open-air art installations along a marked route through the streets. In September, the Fête du Sel in Guérande celebrates the salt harvest with tastings and guided walks across the marshes. Book through Yescapa during spring or early autumn and you can often find better hire rates from local owners, as demand is lighter than in July and August. Campsites along the coast remain open well into October.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 120 km circuit over 3–5 days winds through Guérande's salt marshes and along the coast to Le Croisic. Stop at Batz-sur-Mer's church tower for panoramic views. Flat roads suit any campervan, and several aires dot the route.
Follow 150 km of the Loire estuary over 3–6 days from Nantes to Saint-Nazaire, passing open-air artworks along the Estuaire collection. Pause at Donges marshes for birdwatching. Wide roads make this route comfortable in a motorhome.
A 280 km tour over 5–8 days through Loire-Atlantique's wine country. Visit Clisson's Italianate villas, taste Muscadet in Vallet, and explore the Sèvre Nantaise valley. Quiet departmental roads and vineyard campsites make this a relaxed campervan journey.
Covering 350 km over 5–8 days, this route pairs La Baule's sweeping beach with the Brière marshes inland. Explore Pornichet's seafront, then head into the Brière Regional Natural Park. Motorhome service points are well spaced along the way.
This 480 km loop over 7–11 days covers the full département — from Nantes south to Pornic, west to Guérande, and back through the Brière. Ideal in a campervan or motorhome, with coastal and rural campsites throughout Loire-Atlantique.
An 8–15 day adventure spanning 550 km, linking Loire-Atlantique's highlights with the Morbihan coast to the north and the Vendée shore to the south. Start in Nantes, loop through La Baule and Guérande, then extend to Vannes or Noirmoutier.

Loire-Atlantique offers a wide choice of campsites spread from the Atlantic coast to the rural interior. Coastal sites near La Baule and Saint-Brevin-les-Pins provide direct beach access and full hook-ups for motorhomes, while inland parks close to the Brière marshes and the Guérande peninsula sit in quieter, greener surroundings. Most sites feature hardstanding or grass pitches with electrical connections, water points, waste disposal, showers, and Wi-Fi — everything you need for a comfortable campervan stay.
Most of Loire-Atlantique's motorway network is tolled. The A11 connects Nantes to Paris, and the N165 dual carriageway runs west towards the coast toll-free. Tolls are payable by card or cash at barrier plazas, and a télépéage tag speeds things up if you plan several journeys. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as category 2 vehicles, so expect slightly higher toll charges. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome service points appear regularly along the A11 and the N444 ring road around Nantes.
I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)
Inigio and his lovely girlfriend looked after Dolly for one week here in the Algarve area. They brought her back clean and in really good shape. Before and during the rental period we had a very good dialogue. I can highly reccomend them to lend your car. :-)
Our trip was fantastic, couldn't recommend travelling Sicily via Camper further. Angela and Luca made that super easy with clear comms and help pre booking, during holiday and after. pick up and drop off was a breeze. Clear instructions on how to use the van. All in all great trip.
Fabio made the whole process super easy and was very flexible with our plans. The van was perfect. Practically brand new and had all we needed.
Fantastic experience. Raul really went above and beyond to help us out and was always responsive with any queries we had. The van was in excellent condition, had everything we needed, and was ideal for our trip into the Pyrenees, plus heading south for the solar eclipse. Would highly recommend.
Very helpful owner and great vehicle! Had a great time in the Mundaka.
