Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Lazio

Lazio — a region worth exploring

Lazio stretches across 17,242 square kilometres of central Italy, with the ancient Via Appia — one of the earliest and most important Roman roads, built in 312 BC — still traceable through much of the region today. Beyond Rome, the region rewards those who explore further: the volcanic Lake Bolsena, one of Europe's largest crater lakes, sits roughly 130 km north of the capital, while the coastal town of Sperlonga lies about 200 km to the south-east, its whitewashed houses perched above sandy beaches. Inland, the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park protects Apennine wolves and Marsican brown bears across forested mountain terrain, and the Renaissance gardens of Villa d'Este in Tivoli remain a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For those travelling by road, Lazio offers a satisfying mix of quiet rural lanes through the Sabine Hills, well-maintained coastal stretches along the Tyrrhenian Sea, and mountain passes that wind through the Monti Simbruini. Hiring a campervan lets you connect these contrasting landscapes at your own pace, stopping wherever the view or a local sagra catches your attention. A motorhome gives families and larger groups the space to settle comfortably at lakeside or seaside pitches. Through Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Lazio, choosing from a wide range of campervans and vehicles that suit your route — whether that is a compact van for Rome's outskirts or a fully equipped home on wheels for a fortnight along the coast.

Best time to visit

Late spring and early autumn are ideal for a campervan trip through Lazio. May and June bring warm, dry days perfect for lakeside stops at Bolsena or Bracciano, while September and October offer comfortable temperatures and quieter roads. Summer is the busiest season along the Tyrrhenian coast, so booking early on Yescapa helps you secure the best choice of vehicles from local owners — often at more competitive rates than traditional hire companies. If you visit in July, the Infiorata di Genzano covers streets in elaborate flower petal mosaics, and October's Sagra della Castagna in the Monti Cimini celebrates the chestnut harvest with food stalls and live music. Motorhome pitches at coastal campsites are most plentiful from April through to October.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Lazio

Lazio's motorway network centres on the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA), the ring road encircling Rome, which connects to the A1 heading north and south and the A24 towards the Apennines. Most motorways in the region are toll roads — you collect a ticket on entry and pay at exit, with cash, card, or a Telepass device. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed differently and pay higher tolls. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are typically 80 km/h on dual carriageways and 100 km/h on motorways, compared to 130 km/h for cars. Rest areas with fuel, toilets, and parking suitable for larger vehicles appear regularly along the A1 and A12 coastal motorway. Be aware that some historic town centres, including parts of Rome, enforce ZTL (limited traffic zones) where entry without a permit results in fines.

Communication with Guillaume the owner was excellent. Always available to answer questions and give advice about travel destinations. The campervan was a perfect size for our first experience of this type of holiday. We used sites for our 7 night travel experience which worked well with electric/topping up water etc. Overall a great experience and would use this owner again.

Everything went smooth during the whole pick up and return process. The van has seen some life but everything was clean and in great working condition + the price was very competitive when comparing to anything else available at the time. Very enjoyable trip with the van, highly recommended
