Why choose Hamilton for your road trip

Hamilton — a city worth exploring

Hamilton sits at the heart of New Zealand's Waikato region, but the Hamilton we're exploring here is Scotland's fourth-largest town, where the ruins of Cadzow Castle overlook a herd of rare white Cadzow cattle in Chatelherault Country Park. The park itself spans 200 hectares of gorge, woodland and designed landscape, making it one of central Scotland's finest green spaces. Hamilton is just 19 km south-east of Glasgow, giving you easy access to Scotland's largest city, while Lanark and the UNESCO-listed New Lanark mills sit only 21 km to the south. In town, the Low Parks Museum tells the story of the Hamilton and Lanarkshire area through local history and military collections, and the recently restored Hamilton Mausoleum — famous for its 15-second echo — is well worth a visit. Stroll along the River Clyde walkway or browse the shops around Quarry Street and the town centre. The surrounding Clyde Valley is known for its fruit orchards and gentle farmland, with roads wide enough for larger vehicles and plenty of laybys for a breather. If you're planning a trip through this part of Scotland, hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners who know the best routes and overnight spots. Hamilton makes a practical and rewarding base — compact enough to explore on foot yet perfectly placed for longer journeys into the Highlands or along the Ayrshire coast.

Best time to visit

Hamilton is enjoyable throughout the year, though late spring and summer — May to September — bring the longest days and mildest conditions for touring the Clyde Valley. The Hamilton Mausoleum hosts special event days in summer, and the town's annual gala takes place in June. Autumn colours in Chatelherault Country Park are spectacular from late September into October. If you hire a campervan through Yescapa, you can often find better rates outside the July–August peak, when local owners offer more flexible pricing. Booking a few weeks ahead for spring or early autumn gives you a good balance of availability and value.

I highly recommend renting from Handy! The camper van was absolute perfection for our family road trip with two young children, and its condition was top-notch. At pickup, Handy was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and accommodating, taking the time to explain all the various systems and how to best operate the vehicle. He was also super responsive and helpful whenever I had quick questions during our trip. I couldn't have asked for a better host or vehicle. Thank you, Handy!
