Eastern Austria stretches across 23,555 square kilometres and is home to more than half the country's population, yet beyond Vienna's city limits you'll find a landscape that shifts from the flat Pannonian steppe around Lake Neusiedl — Central Europe's largest steppe lake — to the terraced vineyards of the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The drive from Vienna to Krems an der Donau is just 80 km, placing you at the gateway to one of Europe's most celebrated wine regions in under an hour. Head south-east for 65 km and you reach Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park, where over 340 bird species have been recorded. The Danube itself threads through the region, linking historic towns such as Tulln, Hainburg an der Donau and Dürnstein, whose blue-and-white baroque church tower is instantly recognisable. Lower Austria's Waldviertel quarter adds rolling granite highlands and dense forests, while Burgenland's thermal springs at Bad Tatzmannsdorf offer a welcome rest day. Travelling by campervan lets you connect these contrasting landscapes at your own pace, pulling over for a vineyard tasting or a lakeside swim whenever the mood strikes. A motorhome gives you the space to carry bikes for the well-signed EuroVelo 6 cycle path along the Danube. Through Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across eastern Austria, choosing from a wide range of campervans and larger vehicles suited to the region's mix of open plains and winding valley roads.
Eastern Austria enjoys a continental climate with warm, dry summers that make May to September the prime window for a campervan trip. June is ideal for the Wachau apricot blossom season, when roadside stalls sell fresh Marillen and the valley is at its most photogenic. In September, Burgenland's wine harvest festivals — including the Rust Wine Festival — bring local food and music to village squares. Campsites across the region typically open from April through October, with the widest pitch availability in late spring and early autumn. Through Yescapa, you can often find competitive hire rates outside the July–August peak, as private owners set their own pricing. Book a few weeks ahead for summer weekends to secure your preferred motorhome or campervan.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This 180 km loop follows the Danube from Krems an der Donau to Melk Abbey, passing Dürnstein and Spitz. Ideal for campervans on narrow valley roads, with riverside campsites and vineyard stops along the way. Allow 3–6 days to savour the pace.

Cover 320 km through Austria's largest wine region, stopping at Retz's historic wine cellars and Schloss Hof on the Marchfeld plain. Quiet back roads and small-town campsites make this a relaxing 5–8 day trip through Lower Austria's gentle countryside.
This 350 km route links Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Bad Waltersdorf and Loipersdorf across southern Burgenland and eastern Styria. Enjoy thermal baths between driving days and overnight at well-equipped motorhome pitches. A rewarding 5–8 day journey through rolling hills.

Eastern Austria offers a varied selection of campsites, from lakeside pitches beside Neusiedler See to riverside spots along the Danube and forest-edge sites in the Waldviertel. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Many open from April to October, with a handful operating year-round near Vienna and the thermal spa towns of Burgenland.
Austria requires a motorway vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes; you can buy a digital version online before your trip. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes pay distance-based tolls via a GO-Box, available at border service stations and larger petrol stops. On motorways, the speed limit for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes is 80 km/h, while those under 3.5 tonnes may travel at up to 100 km/h. The A1, A2 and A4 are the main arteries through eastern Austria, all well maintained with regular rest areas offering fresh water and waste disposal points suited to campervans and motorhomes.
Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️
Zeben was the most amazing and helpful host, always there if needed. The van has the perfect setup and it’s the best way to spend time on the island. Could not recommend more!
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))
