Why choose Cologne for your road trip

Cologne — a city worth exploring

Cologne's iconic cathedral, the Kölner Dom, took 632 years to complete and remains the tallest twin-spired church in the world at 157 metres. Standing on the banks of the Rhine, this lively city blends Roman heritage with a thriving arts scene and famously welcoming locals. Wander through the Römisch-Germanisches Museum to see mosaics dating back to the 3rd century, or explore the Museum Ludwig, home to one of Europe's largest collections of Pop Art. The Belgian Quarter buzzes with independent shops and cafés, while the Rheinauhafen waterfront district showcases striking modern architecture, including the Kranhaus buildings. Düsseldorf sits just 40 km to the north, and the university city of Bonn is only 30 km to the south — both make for easy day trips. Cologne's position along the Rhine means flat, well-maintained roads that are ideal for larger vehicles, and the city's ring-road system helps you navigate without squeezing through narrow old-town lanes. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Cologne area, giving you the flexibility to collect a vehicle close to where you need it. Peer-to-peer hire also means a wider choice of layouts and sizes, so whether you are planning a weekend along the Moselle or a longer tour through the Eifel, you can find the right fit for your trip.

Best time to visit

Cologne is a year-round destination, with each season offering something special. The world-famous Kölner Karneval kicks off in February, filling the streets with parades and music — book your campervan early for this one. Summer brings the Cologne Lights fireworks festival in July, perfect for watching from a riverside pitch. Autumn is ideal for quieter touring, and hiring through Yescapa in the shoulder months often means more choice and better value from local owners. Winter transforms the city with its celebrated Christmas markets around the Dom, making a motorhome trip through the Rhineland wonderfully festive.

Where to park your motorhome

Cologne has several dedicated motorhome parking areas that make visiting the city centre straightforward. Overnight stays in regular car parks are generally not permitted for campervans or motorhomes, so use a designated Reisemobilhafen (motorhome stopover) instead. Most offer fresh water, waste disposal and electric hook-ups. Arrive before early afternoon in peak season to secure a spot, and always check height barriers before entering any multi-storey facility.

  • Reisemobilhafen Köln, 5km south — Central motorhome stopover on the Rhine, within walking distance of the old town. Offers electric hook-ups, fresh water and waste disposal. Space for around 50 vehicles.
  • Parkplatz Messe Köln, 6km east — Large open car park near the Koelnmesse exhibition centre. Suitable for motorhomes outside event days. No hook-ups but flat, accessible surface with good transport links to the centre.
  • Wohnmobilstellplatz Köln-Niehl, 7km north — Quiet residential-area stopover in the north of Cologne. Offers basic facilities including fresh water and waste disposal. A short tram ride to the cathedral and city centre.

We hired Trina for 5 nights earlier this July. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the island. Jandro was incredibly helpful, always on hand before and during the trip to answer any questions which really helped us navigate the island and enjoy our trip. The vehicle was fantastic, an incredible experience to drive. All the amenities were brilliant as well. I would highly recommend using Jandro and one of his vans for a fantastic Mallorca experience!

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.

Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.

We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
