Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 1997, transformed a former industrial port into one of Europe's most celebrated cultural destinations. Today, the city blends Basque heritage with bold modern architecture along the banks of the Nervión estuary. Stroll through the Casco Viejo, Bilbao's medieval old quarter with its seven original streets, and visit the Catedral de Santiago, a 14th-century Gothic church at its heart. Cross the Zubizuri footbridge, a curving glass walkway by Santiago Calatrava, for views across the river towards the Azkuna Zentroa cultural centre, housed in a converted 1909 wine warehouse. For green space, the Parque de Doña Casilda Jiménez de Aberásturi offers shaded paths and a boating lake just minutes from the centre. San Sebastián lies roughly 100 km to the east along the AP-8 motorway, while the wine country of La Rioja begins around 95 km to the south, making Bilbao an ideal base for wider exploration. The surrounding Basque coastline features dramatic cliffs and compact fishing villages, though some coastal roads are narrow and winding — worth bearing in mind when planning your route in a larger vehicle. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Bilbao area, giving you the flexibility to set off at your own pace and discover the Basque Country on your own terms.
Bilbao enjoys a mild, oceanic climate that suits campervan travel throughout the year. The Aste Nagusia festival in August fills the city with music, fireworks and street performances for nine days, while the ZINEBI international documentary and short film festival in November draws cinema lovers each autumn. Summer, from June to September, is the busiest period — booking your vehicle early on Yescapa helps you secure the best choice from local owners at competitive peer-to-peer prices. Spring and early autumn bring comfortable driving temperatures and quieter campsites along the Basque coast, ideal for a more relaxed motorhome trip around Bilbao.
Bilbao is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 35 km north-west from Bilbao to the coastal town of Getxo. Ride the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO-listed transporter bridge, then walk the clifftop path to Punta Galea lighthouse. Campervan parking is available near Ereaga beach — a relaxed 1–3 day escape from the city.
This 100 km route east along the AP-8 connects two of the Basque Country's finest cities. Stop at Zarautz for its long surf beach and Getaria to visit the Balenciaga Museum. San Sebastián's La Concha bay is the perfect finale. Allow 3–6 days to enjoy the coastal scenery at a relaxed pace in your motorhome.
Drive 75 km east to Guernica, the symbolic heart of Basque culture. Visit the Casa de Juntas and the ancient oak tree of Gernika, then continue to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve for birdwatching and kayaking. Campsites near Mundaka offer pitches with estuary views — ideal for 1–4 days.
Head 160 km south from Bilbao through green valleys to Vitoria-Gasteiz, the Basque capital. Explore the medieval old town, the Artium contemporary art museum and the Salburua wetlands. Campervan services are available at nearby Camping Arkaia, making this a comfortable 3–6 day round trip.
This 300 km route west takes you along the Cantabrian coast to Santander, then inland to the Picos de Europa mountains. Visit the Altamira cave museum and hike the Cares Gorge. Mountain roads can be narrow, so a compact motorhome works best. Allow 5–8 days for the full loop.
Cover 395 km north-east from Bilbao across the French border to Bordeaux. Break the journey in Bayonne for Basque chocolate and Arcachon for oysters by the dune. Plenty of well-equipped aires dot the French Atlantic coast for overnight stops. A 5–8 day campervan adventure with culture and cuisine.

The Bilbao area offers a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes, from coastal spots near the Bay of Biscay to greener inland settings. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower and toilet blocks, and dedicated motorhome service areas. Whether you prefer waking up to the sound of waves or the quiet of a Basque valley, you will find well-maintained pitches within easy reach of Bilbao.
Bilbao has several parking options for larger vehicles, though the narrow streets of the Casco Viejo are best avoided in a motorhome. Dedicated motorhome areas offer services such as fresh water and waste disposal. Overnight parking outside designated areas is generally not permitted within the city, so plan your stops in advance. Check height restrictions before entering any underground car park.
I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)
Inigio and his lovely girlfriend looked after Dolly for one week here in the Algarve area. They brought her back clean and in really good shape. Before and during the rental period we had a very good dialogue. I can highly reccomend them to lend your car. :-)
Our trip was fantastic, couldn't recommend travelling Sicily via Camper further. Angela and Luca made that super easy with clear comms and help pre booking, during holiday and after. pick up and drop off was a breeze. Clear instructions on how to use the van. All in all great trip.
Fabio made the whole process super easy and was very flexible with our plans. The van was perfect. Practically brand new and had all we needed.
Fantastic experience. Raul really went above and beyond to help us out and was always responsive with any queries we had. The van was in excellent condition, had everything we needed, and was ideal for our trip into the Pyrenees, plus heading south for the solar eclipse. Would highly recommend.
Very helpful owner and great vehicle! Had a great time in the Mundaka.
