The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
The Avesnois is home to France's northernmost natural regional park, the Parc naturel régional de l'Avesnois, covering roughly 1,300 square kilometres of rolling bocage countryside, orchards and dense woodland. From the fortified town of Le Quesnoy, where you can walk the remarkably intact Vauban ramparts, to the abbey village of Maroilles — birthplace of the pungent cheese that bears its name — this corner of northern France rewards slow, curious travel. The distance from Avesnes-sur-Helpe to Maubeuge is only about 25 km, yet the landscape shifts from open pasture to thick forest around the Forêt de Mormal, one of the largest deciduous woodlands in northern France at over 9,000 hectares. Head south-east and you reach the Val Joly lake near Eppe-Sauvage, a 180-hectare reservoir popular for watersports and lakeside walks, roughly 40 km from Fourmies. Quiet departmental roads wind through the bocage, making the Avesnois ideal territory for campervans and smaller motorhomes that can navigate narrow lanes between farms and villages. Larger vehicles will find well-maintained D-roads connecting the main towns without difficulty. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the Hauts-de-France region, giving you the flexibility to collect a vehicle near the Avesnois and set your own pace through this peaceful, green landscape.
May to September is the prime window for exploring the Avesnois by campervan, when the bocage hedgerows are lush and campsites around Val Joly lake are fully open. In August, the Fête du Maroilles celebrates the region's famous cheese with tastings and markets — a must for food lovers. Autumn brings rich colour to the Forêt de Mormal and quieter roads, while spring wildflower meadows are at their best in May. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer months often means more competitive hire prices from local owners, and you will have a wider choice of pitches across the Avesnois.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This gentle 80 km loop from Maroilles winds through the Avesnois bocage, passing cider orchards and the fortified farm at Dourlers. Ideal for campervans, with quiet lanes and easy overnight stops in small villages.
A 65 km route linking Le Quesnoy's Vauban ramparts to the citadel at Avesnes-sur-Helpe. Allow 3–6 days to explore the Avesnois at a relaxed pace, with riverside picnic spots along the Helpe Majeure.
Cover 150 km through the Avesnois, centred on the vast Forêt de Mormal. Stop at Locquignol deep in the forest and Bavay's archaeological site. Motorhomes fit well on the D-roads, and forest car parks offer daytime halts.
This 200 km circuit across the Avesnois visits Maroilles abbey, the cheese cellars of the Thiérache and the hilltop church at Sains-du-Nord. A campervan is perfect for sampling local produce at farm gates along the way.
At 280 km over 7–11 days, this route covers the full Avesnois from Fourmies' textile museum to Val Joly lake and the ramparts of Le Quesnoy. Campsites are well spaced, suiting both campervans and motorhomes.
A 350 km journey linking the Avesnois with the French Ardennes, passing through Hirson and the Thiérache's fortified churches. Allow 8–15 days and check border-area campsites in advance during summer months.

The Avesnois offers a good spread of campsites set among woodland, lakeside and village locations. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, water points and waste disposal suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Pitches tend to be spacious and grassy, reflecting the rural character of the area. Several sites sit close to walking and cycling trails, so you can park up and explore on foot. Booking ahead is recommended for lakeside spots in July and August.
The Avesnois sits between the A2 (towards Valenciennes) and the Belgian border, so most driving is on well-maintained D-roads rather than motorways. French motorways are tolled, but you are unlikely to encounter toll booths within the park itself. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. The bocage lanes can be narrow, so keep an eye on width restriction signs near village centres. Rest areas and fuel stations are plentiful along the D959 and D951 corridors linking Avesnes-sur-Helpe, Maubeuge and Le Quesnoy.
Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️
Zeben was the most amazing and helpful host, always there if needed. The van has the perfect setup and it’s the best way to spend time on the island. Could not recommend more!
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))
