Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Apulia

Apulia — a region worth exploring

Puglia stretches over 800 kilometres of coastline along Italy's south-eastern heel, making it one of the longest coastal regions in the country and a natural playground for road trips. From the limestone cliffs of the Gargano Peninsula in the north to the warm, shallow waters of the Salento coast in the south, the landscape shifts constantly. You can explore the UNESCO-listed trulli houses of Alberobello, wander the bright white streets of Ostuni, and stand inside the octagonal mystery of Castel del Monte near Andria. The drive from Bari to Lecce covers roughly 150 km along well-maintained roads, while the route from Foggia up to Vieste on the Gargano coast is about 100 km of winding, scenic bends that reward patient drivers. Inland, the Itria Valley offers gentle hills dotted with olive groves and dry-stone walls — easy terrain for both campervans and larger vehicles. Puglia's flat or gently rolling geography means most roads are accessible to motorhomes of all sizes, though narrower lanes in historic town centres call for a bit of care. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners across the region, giving you the flexibility to pick up in Bari, Lecce, or Foggia and start your adventure right where it suits you. The peer-to-peer model means a wider choice of vehicles at a range of price points, so you can match the right set of wheels to your itinerary.

Best time to visit

May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Puglia, with long sunny days and warm seas. The Notte della Taranta folk music festival in Melpignano each August draws huge crowds to the Salento area, while the Festa di San Nicola in Bari every May fills the old town with processions and fireworks. Spring and early autumn offer quieter roads and comfortable temperatures, ideal for exploring at your own pace. Book through Yescapa during shoulder months and you often find better rates from local owners, as peer-to-peer hire keeps pricing competitive even in Puglia's busiest season.

Grand Tour of Puglia

500 km 7–11 days

Cover 500 km from Foggia to Santa Maria di Leuca at Puglia's southern tip over 7–11 days. Pass through Trani's cathedral harbour, Polignano a Mare's cliff-top old town, and the baroque streets of Lecce. Motorhome-friendly campsites are plentiful along the route.

Puglia to Basilicata Discovery

Salento Between Two Seas

Just 150 km over 3–5 days, this short Puglia route runs from Lecce to Gallipoli on the Ionian side, then across to Otranto on the Adriatic. Enjoy sandy beaches, coastal towers, and fresh seafood. A compact campervan is perfect for the narrow Salento lanes.

The Adriatic Coast Road

350 km 5–8 days

Follow 350 km of Puglia's Adriatic shoreline from Rodi Garganico south to Brindisi over 5–8 days. Stop at Barletta's Colossus statue, explore Monopoli's old port, and swim at Torre Guaceto nature reserve. Motorhome pitches with hook-ups are easy to find along this stretch.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Apulia

Puglia's main motorway is the A14, which runs along the Adriatic coast from Foggia down to Bari and connects to the national network heading north. Tolls apply on the A14 and are paid at booths by card or cash. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on dual carriageways, so keep an eye on your vehicle class. Beyond the motorway, Puglia relies on well-surfaced state roads (strade statali) that link coastal towns and inland villages. Rest areas with basic facilities appear regularly along the A14, though fuel stops can be further apart on rural routes.

We had a great time in the motorhome. Jean Pierre was very friendly and professional. We were shown how everything works before setting off. We would definitely recommend hiring this vehicle. Jean Pierre only speaks French but with the aid of a translator app and his son it worked out absolutely fine. Thanks again Jean-Pierre.

We hired this camper Asier for our family holiday through Spain and France, what a great van it is with everything you need. Asier is very friendly and helpful even though there was a language barrier. We would definitely use again if we needed to.

Mario was very helpful and supported us with this new experience. The vehicle was basically brand new and while there were some minor problems with cupboard doors, it was a very well equipped and comfortable van for 2 adults and two children of 10 and 13 years old. Highly recommended!
