Anchorage sits at the base of the Chugach Mountains where Cook Inlet meets the Alaskan wilderness, making it the only US city where you can spot moose on your morning walk and beluga whales from the shoreline. Home to roughly 40 per cent of Alaska's population, it serves as the gateway to some of North America's most dramatic landscapes. Stroll the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an 18 km paved path that hugs the coast from downtown to Kincaid Park, ideal for cycling or a leisurely walk with mountain views. The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center offers world-class exhibits on Arctic culture and Alaskan art, while the Alaska Native Heritage Center brings Indigenous traditions to life through storytelling and craft demonstrations. For wildlife encounters, the Alaska Zoo is home to orphaned and rescued animals native to the region. Seward is just 200 km to the south along the spectacular Seward Highway, and the town of Talkeetna — a popular base for Denali adventures — lies roughly 185 km north. The road network around Anchorage is well suited to larger vehicles, with wide highways and generous pull-offs for scenic stops. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners, giving you the flexibility to collect your vehicle in Anchorage and set off at your own pace. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to explore Alaska without the overhead of traditional hire companies.
Anchorage comes alive from late May to mid-September, when daylight stretches to nearly 20 hours and temperatures sit comfortably between 12 °C and 20 °C. The Anchorage Market & Festival runs every weekend from mid-May through September, offering local food and crafts. In late June, the Mayor's Marathon draws runners from across the state. Book your campervan early for July and August — these are the most sought-after months, and Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means better value than traditional hire. Shoulder months like May and September bring quieter campsites and golden autumn colours, perfect for a more relaxed motorhome trip around Anchorage.
Anchorage is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 80 km south-east from Anchorage along the Seward Highway, one of America's most scenic drives. Stop at Beluga Point for whale-watching, then explore Alyeska Resort and the Winner Creek Trail in Girdwood. Campervan parking is plentiful at trailheads, and the journey suits a relaxed 1–4 day trip.
A short 50 km drive south of Anchorage brings you to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, where you can see bears, moose and bison up close. Pair it with a stop at Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary. The centre has a large car park suitable for motorhomes, making this an easy 1–3 day outing.
Follow the Seward Highway 200 km south from Anchorage through the Kenai Peninsula. Visit Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park and take a wildlife cruise from Seward's harbour. Allow 3–6 days to enjoy the route, and book campervan pitches at Waterfront Park for harbour views.
Drive 150 km south-west from Anchorage to Homer, known for its dramatic Homer Spit stretching into Kachemak Bay. Stop at the Pratt Museum and explore Kachemak Bay State Park by water taxi. The route is well paved and campsite hook-ups are available along the Spit for longer stays of 3–6 days.
Travel 380 km north from Anchorage to Denali National Park for a chance to spot grizzly bears and see North America's tallest peak. Stop in Talkeetna for flightseeing tours and local breweries. Allow 5–8 days and arrive early to secure a campervan pitch at Riley Creek Campground.
Head 480 km north-east from Anchorage through Thompson Pass to reach Valdez, gateway to Prince William Sound. Visit Worthington Glacier and take a boat tour past Columbia Glacier. The Glenn and Richardson Highways are motorhome-friendly, and the trip rewards 5–8 days of exploration.

Anchorage and its surroundings offer a good mix of urban and wilderness campsites for both campervans and motorhomes. In the city itself you will find sites with full hook-ups, dump stations and shower blocks, while nearby options along the Chugach foothills and Eagle River valley provide more natural settings with basic facilities. Most sites are open from late May to September, so plan your Anchorage stay accordingly.
Anchorage is relatively relaxed about larger vehicles, but overnight parking on public streets is not generally permitted. Several large retail car parks welcome motorhomes and campervans for daytime stops, and some tolerate overnight stays — always check signage and ask staff. For longer visits, a dedicated campsite or RV park is the safest option.
The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.
We hired Trina for 5 nights earlier this July. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the island. Jandro was incredibly helpful, always on hand before and during the trip to answer any questions which really helped us navigate the island and enjoy our trip. The vehicle was fantastic, an incredible experience to drive. All the amenities were brilliant as well. I would highly recommend using Jandro and one of his vans for a fantastic Mallorca experience!
Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.
Very easy and open person… all went well , on time and with all the agremants.
Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.
