Why choose Munich for your road trip

Munich — a city worth exploring

Munich's Marienplatz has drawn visitors since 1158, when Henry the Lion founded the city at the crossroads of salt trade routes. Today, the square's Neues Rathaus puts on its famous Glockenspiel performance daily, a spectacle best enjoyed from the pedestrian zone below. From here, you can wander to the Englischer Garten, one of the world's largest urban parks at over 900 acres, or take in centuries of art at the Alte Pinakothek, home to masterworks by Dürer and Rubens. The Deutsches Museum on its Isar island is the world's largest science and technology museum, with interactive exhibits that appeal to every age group. For a change of pace, the BMW Welt and Museum sit just north of the centre, showcasing Bavarian engineering past and present. Munich's position at the edge of the Bavarian Alps makes it an ideal launch point for exploring the countryside — Salzburg is roughly 145 km to the south-east, while Augsburg lies just 68 km to the north-west along the motorway. Roads heading south towards the mountains are well-maintained and suited to larger vehicles, though Alpine passes can be narrow and winding. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in and around Munich, giving you the flexibility to collect a vehicle that suits your plans and set off at your own pace. It is a peer-to-peer approach that often means better value and personal tips from people who know the region inside out.

Best time to visit

Munich is wonderful year-round, with each season offering something distinct. The world-famous Oktoberfest runs from mid-September into early October, drawing millions to the Theresienwiese fairgrounds — book your campervan well ahead for this period. The Christkindlmarkt in December transforms Marienplatz into a festive wonderland. Spring and early summer are ideal for driving south into the Alps, with long daylight hours and pleasant conditions. Through Yescapa, you can often find competitive hire rates outside peak festival weeks, as local owners set their own pricing.

Where to park your motorhome

Munich offers several dedicated parking areas suitable for motorhomes and campervans. Overnight parking in a standard car park is generally not permitted unless the site explicitly allows it, so always check signage. The city's Park and Ride facilities near U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations are a practical option for day visits — park on the outskirts and ride into the centre. Height barriers apply at many multi-storey car parks, so open-air sites are your best bet for taller vehicles.

  • Wohnmobilstellplatz Allianz Arena, 12km north — Dedicated motorhome parking area beside the Allianz Arena with flat, surfaced bays. Convenient U-Bahn connection to the city centre. Check availability on match days.
  • P+R Fröttmaning, 11km north — Large Park and Ride car park next to the Fröttmaning U-Bahn station. Open-air layout suits taller vehicles. Affordable day rates with direct underground access to Marienplatz.
  • Parkplatz Olympiapark, 6km northwest — Open-air car park at the Olympiapark with space for larger vehicles. Walking distance to the Olympic Tower and BMW Welt. Height restrictions do not apply in the main surface lot.

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.

Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.

We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.
