Kiel sits at the end of the Kieler Förde, a 17-kilometre fjord-like inlet that has shaped the city's identity since it hosted the first Olympic sailing events in 1936. The waterfront promenade known as the Kiellinie stretches along the western shore, offering unbroken views of ferries crossing to Scandinavia. At the Schifffahrtsmuseum Fischhalle you can trace centuries of maritime heritage, while the Zoologisches Museum der Universität Kiel houses one of northern Germany's most impressive natural-history collections. For green space, the Alter Botanischer Garten provides a peaceful stop right in the city centre, and the Laboe Naval Memorial stands 18 km to the north at the mouth of the fjord, complete with a Second World War submarine you can walk through. Lübeck, with its UNESCO-listed old town, is roughly 88 km to the south-east, and the Danish border at Flensburg lies about 86 km to the north-west — both make rewarding day trips. The flat coastal terrain and well-maintained roads around Kiel are ideal for larger vehicles, and the region's network of smaller harbours and beaches gives you plenty of reasons to keep moving. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Kiel area, which means personal tips on the best waterside spots and flexible pick-up arrangements that suit your schedule.
Kiel truly comes alive during Kieler Woche, the world's largest sailing event, held in the last full week of June each year. The festival fills the waterfront with live music, food stalls and tall ships, so booking your campervan early is well worth it. July and August bring the warmest weather for exploring the Baltic beaches, while September and October offer quieter roads and golden coastal light. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model, you can often find competitive hire prices outside peak weeks, and local owners in Kiel may share insider recommendations for the best moorings and overnight spots along the fjord.

The Kiel area offers a fine selection of campsites along the Baltic shore, ranging from beachfront spots with panoramic sea views to quieter inland options surrounded by woodland. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower and toilet blocks, and dedicated pitches for both campervans and motorhomes. If you prefer to stay close to the city centre, several sites sit within a short drive of Kiel, giving you easy access to the waterfront and ferry terminals.
Kiel provides several dedicated motorhome and campervan parking areas close to the waterfront and city centre. Overnight stays in regular car parks are generally not permitted unless signposted otherwise, so look for designated Wohnmobilstellplätze (motorhome stopovers). These sites typically offer fresh-water supply, waste disposal and electricity for a modest daily fee. Always check posted height restrictions before entering multi-storey or barrier-controlled car parks with a larger vehicle.
I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)
Inigio and his lovely girlfriend looked after Dolly for one week here in the Algarve area. They brought her back clean and in really good shape. Before and during the rental period we had a very good dialogue. I can highly reccomend them to lend your car. :-)
Our trip was fantastic, couldn't recommend travelling Sicily via Camper further. Angela and Luca made that super easy with clear comms and help pre booking, during holiday and after. pick up and drop off was a breeze. Clear instructions on how to use the van. All in all great trip.
Fabio made the whole process super easy and was very flexible with our plans. The van was perfect. Practically brand new and had all we needed.
Fantastic experience. Raul really went above and beyond to help us out and was always responsive with any queries we had. The van was in excellent condition, had everything we needed, and was ideal for our trip into the Pyrenees, plus heading south for the solar eclipse. Would highly recommend.
