Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Schleswig-Holstein

Schleswig-Holstein — a region worth exploring

Schleswig-Holstein is the only German state bordered by two seas — the North Sea to the west and the Baltic Sea to the east — with roughly 1,190 kilometres of coastline to explore. This northernmost federal state stretches from the Danish border down to the outskirts of Hamburg, offering a landscape shaped by tidal flats, sandy beaches, and gently rolling farmland. The Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects vast mudflats teeming with wildlife, while the island of Fehmarn — connected to the mainland by the Fehmarnsund Bridge — is a favourite destination for water sports and cycling. Inland, the Holsteinische Schweiz (Holstein Switzerland) nature park is dotted with over 200 lakes, including the Großer Plöner See, the largest lake in the state. From Kiel, the state capital, to the medieval old town of Lübeck — a distance of about 90 kilometres — you pass through gentle countryside ideal for leisurely driving. Head north from Flensburg to the resort town of Sankt Peter-Ording, roughly 130 kilometres along the west coast, and you will find wide sandy beaches backed by characteristic stilted buildings. Schleswig-Holstein suits both campervans and motorhomes thanks to well-maintained roads and plentiful stopovers. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Schleswig-Holstein, choosing from a range of vehicles that match your travel style and group size.

Best time to visit

The best months to hire a campervan in Schleswig-Holstein are May to September, when long daylight hours and mild coastal breezes make touring between the two seas a pleasure. The Kieler Woche (Kiel Week) in late June is one of the world's largest sailing events and fills the harbour city with live music and maritime festivities. In autumn, the Husumer Krokusblüte gives way to the colourful Biikebrennen fire festivals along the North Sea coast each February. Campsites across Schleswig-Holstein are fully open from Easter through October, with the widest choice of pitches in early summer and September. Booking through Yescapa outside peak July and August often means more competitive hire prices from private owners.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Schleswig-Holstein

Germany's motorways (Autobahnen) are toll-free for cars and motorhomes under 7.5 tonnes, so you can travel across Schleswig-Holstein without any road charges. The A1 and A7 are the main north–south routes, while the A21 and A23 connect inland areas to the coast. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on rural roads. Many coastal and rural routes in Schleswig-Holstein are single-carriageway B-roads, well surfaced but narrower — take care with larger vehicles on dyke roads along the North Sea.

Absolutely loved staying in Alfreds campervan. The decor was beautiful. It had everything we needed, a perfect space for two people for time in nature travelling. It was so good having a fridge on the road. He answered any questions I had and the pick up/ drop off was great. Would definitely love to rent it again in the future when we come back to Spain. Communication with Guillaume the owner was excellent. Always available to answer questions and give advice about travel destinations. The campervan was a perfect size for our first experience of this type of holiday. We used sites for our 7 night travel experience which worked well with electric/topping up water etc. Overall a great experience and would use this owner again.
