Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Cantabria

Cantabria — a region worth exploring

Cantabria stretches along 220 kilometres of Spain's northern coastline, where the Cantabrian Sea meets the Picos de Europa mountains in a landscape that shifts from sandy beaches to peaks above 2,600 metres within just 40 kilometres. The region is home to the Cave of Altamira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving prehistoric paintings over 14,000 years old, and the Cabárceno Nature Park, a 750-hectare wildlife reserve set in a reclaimed open-pit mine. From the lively port city of Santander to the medieval village of Santillana del Mar — roughly 30 kilometres apart — you can explore a remarkable variety of architecture, cuisine and scenery in a compact area. Head south from the coast and within 120 kilometres you reach Fuente Dé, where a cable car climbs 753 metres to a viewpoint in the heart of the Picos de Europa. Cantabria's roads wind through green valleys and along dramatic cliffs, making it a rewarding region for slow-paced touring. Narrow mountain lanes suit campervans perfectly, while wider coastal routes are comfortable for larger motorhomes. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Cantabria, giving you a wide choice of campervans and vehicles based in the region — ideal for picking up close to your starting point and setting off at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Cantabria enjoys a mild, green climate year-round, making it a great destination outside the typical Mediterranean calendar. June to September offers the warmest weather for beach stops and mountain hikes, with the Semana Grande festival in Santander lighting up late July with fireworks, concerts and regattas. Spring is ideal for quieter roads and wildflower-filled valleys, while autumn brings rich colours to the Picos de Europa. With Yescapa, you benefit from peer-to-peer pricing, so hiring a campervan in Cantabria during shoulder months can be noticeably more affordable. Book ahead for August, the busiest period, to secure the best choice of vehicles.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Cantabria

Cantabria's main artery is the A-8 motorway, which runs along the coast and is toll-free across the region, connecting Santander to both Bilbao and Asturias. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on conventional roads. The region's secondary roads — particularly the CA-185 along the coast and mountain routes towards Fuente Dé — are well-maintained but can be narrow and winding, so take your time. Rest areas with services appear regularly along the A-8, and larger vehicles should plan fuel stops in advance on inland routes.

The trip was amazing. Francesca, the owner, helped us a lot and was always available. The van was really good, with big space inside. Highly recommended.

Dominique is a wonderful, kind and attentive host. The van was perfect, clean and cosy. We loved the trip even though the high altitude passes were very scary especially as we are driving on the wrong side of the road!

Andre couldn’t have been more helpful, plus he is a positive, warm individual. The camper was superb in every way, hygienic, beautiful handling and equipped with everything needed, no silly extras for bedding. Brand new mattresses that were so comfortable and all the windows had bug netting so nothing could get in or bite us. Will definitely do this again, PLUS great value. Very very happy with service and equipment

Paloma was a pleasure to drive and really comfortable for our family of four. The van was equipped with everything we needed, beds were spacious and had safety nets, the shower and toilet were very handy, there was plenty of storage space and lots of room to move around. Susana was really helpful and accommodating and very easy to communicate with throughout our trip. The only disappointing aspect is that the fridge did not work, and the freezer only worked when plugged in. While the freezer was ok for keeping some items cool, it did make things considerably more difficult for us - we were travelling with 2 young children and cooked for ourselves most evenings. It was frustrating having to visit a shop every day/every other day and we ended up having to bin quite a lot of food. It is a shame this wasn't mentioned in the listing as it would have impacted our decision to book the van. Every other aspect was faultless and despite the issue with the fridge we had a really wonderful 2 week adventure in Paloma. We would definitely recommend if you are happy to operate without a fridge and can rely on the freezer.
