Santander sits on a peninsula jutting into the Bay of Biscay, with the Palacio de la Magdalena occupying its eastern headland since 1912 as a former royal summer residence. The city blends coastal living with culture — you can stroll through the Centro Botín, a contemporary art centre designed by Renzo Piano that opened in 2017, before heading to the Catedral de Santander, parts of which date back to the 13th century. The sweeping Playa del Sardinero offers two golden sand beaches framed by elegant Belle Époque architecture, while the Museo Marítimo del Cantábrico charts the region's deep connection with the sea through interactive exhibits and live aquariums. Bilbao is roughly 100 km to the east along the A-8 motorway, and the medieval town of Santillana del Mar lies just 30 km to the west, making Santander an ideal base for exploring Cantabria's coastline. The roads heading west hug the shore with regular laybys and viewpoints, and the terrain stays relatively gentle — perfect for larger vehicles. With Yescapa, you hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in Santander, which means you can collect your vehicle close to the ferry port or city centre and set off without delay. Peer-to-peer hire also gives you access to a wider choice of vehicles at different price points, so whether you want a compact campervan for a weekend or a fully equipped motorhome for a fortnight, you will find something that fits.
Santander enjoys a mild oceanic climate, making it a comfortable destination from late spring through to early autumn. The Semana Grande festival in late July fills the city with open-air concerts, fireworks and regattas across the bay. September brings the Festival Internacional de Santander, one of Spain's longest-running performing arts events. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your campervan through Yescapa ahead of time helps you secure the best choice and price from local owners. Outside peak months, Santander's campsites are quieter and you can explore the coast at a relaxed pace with plenty of space for your motorhome.
Santander is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 30 km west from Santander along the CA-131 to reach Comillas, home to El Capricho, a colourful villa designed by Antoni Gaudí. Explore the Pontifical University on the hilltop and relax on Comillas beach. Campervan parking is available near the centre, and the coastal road offers easy driving throughout.
This 75 km route west from Santander follows the coast through Comillas before arriving at San Vicente de la Barquera, a fishing town framed by the Picos de Europa. Walk across the medieval Puente de la Maza and visit the 13th-century castle. Motorhome services are available at nearby Camping Oyambre.
Cover 110 km east on the A-8 motorway from Santander to Bilbao. Stop at Castro Urdiales to see its Gothic church and harbour, then continue to the Guggenheim Museum and Casco Viejo in Bilbao. The motorway is well suited to larger vehicles, and campervan-friendly parking exists near the riverfront.
Drive 155 km south-west from Santander into the Picos de Europa National Park. Take the cable car at Fuente Dé for panoramic mountain views, then visit the lakeside Sanctuary of Covadonga. Mountain roads are well maintained but winding, so a compact campervan is the most comfortable option here.
Follow the A-67 and A-8 for 200 km west from Santander to Oviedo, stopping at the seaside town of Llanes and the Bufones de Pría blowholes along the way. In Oviedo, explore the pre-Romanesque churches, a UNESCO World Heritage group. Campsites along the Asturian coast welcome motorhomes year-round.
This 390 km journey west from Santander traces the northern Spanish coast through Ribadeo, where Praia das Catedrais reveals cathedral-like rock arches at low tide. The Santander area offers a good mix of coastal and rural campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most sites along the Cantabrian coast provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks and dedicated pitches for larger vehicles. Within the city itself, Camping Cabo Mayor sits close to the Sardinero beaches, while further afield you will find well-equipped sites near quieter stretches of coastline. Facilities typically include Wi-Fi, laundry areas and fresh water points, so you can restock and recharge between days of exploring.
Santander has several car parks that can accommodate larger vehicles, though spaces for motorhomes and campervans can fill up during summer weekends. Overnight parking outside designated areas is not permitted within the city, so plan ahead. Height barriers apply at some underground car parks, so always check clearance before entering. For longer stays, using a campsite with dedicated pitches is the most practical option.
Excellent guests! Everything went smoothly from start to finish. They took great care of the van, communication was easy, and they returned it on time. We highly recommend them to other hosts and would be happy to welcome them again anytime!

We love Pedro and his Flower Power Spaceship <3 from start to finish the experience was fantastic. When we collected the van from Pedro he took time to explain everything about it and passionately and then when we hit the road we fell more and more in love with it ----- it has everything we needed ! Super clean, super cool. "small country, small van" . . . . Pedro: kindest man with steeziest heart <3 obrigada X X X X
We rented the van for almost 3 weeks and we had a lovely time exploring Spain. The van has everything we needed and working properly. It’s spacious and comfortable for two to sleep. We were a bit worried about the heatwave the country was having and Jeremie managed to buy a double fan for us to sleep, which we highly appreciated. He is very friendly and good with communicating. The van runs smoothly, we just had a message on the screen to top up the oil (which was easy enough to stop at the petrol station and buy one - with Jeremie instructions we were able to do it). We really recommend renting his van for your adventure. ☺️
It was a genuine pleasure travelling in Álvaro’s campervan. Not only was it well maintained and fully equipped, but Álvaro also proved to be an exceptional host—friendly, responsive, and always willing to help. His support played a key role in ensuring that the trip went as smoothly as possible. I would recommend him without hesitation and sincerely hope to have the opportunity to repeat the experience. Thank you very much for everything!
