Zagreb's iconic Cathedral of the Assumption, with its twin spires reaching 108 metres, has dominated the city's skyline since the 13th century. As Croatia's capital, Zagreb blends Austro-Hungarian architecture with a lively café culture that spills across its pedestrianised squares. Stroll through the Upper Town to visit the Museum of Broken Relationships, a one-of-a-kind collection of personal mementos from ended love affairs. The Croatian National Theatre, an ornate neo-baroque building on Marshal Tito Square, hosts opera and ballet throughout the year. For green space, Maksimir Park stretches across 316 hectares on the city's eastern side, offering shaded paths and a small zoo. Head south to Jarun Lake, where locals swim, cycle and picnic along its shores. Zagreb also makes a superb base for wider exploration — the Plitvice Lakes National Park lies roughly 130 km to the south, while the Slovenian capital Ljubljana is just 140 km to the northwest. The roads leading out of the city are well-maintained motorways, making it straightforward to set off in a campervan or motorhome. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners who know the region and can share tips on the best routes, overnight spots and seasonal highlights. Whether you are planning a weekend escape to the countryside or a longer coastal adventure, picking up a campervan in Zagreb puts you right at the crossroads of Central Europe and the Adriatic.
Zagreb comes alive from May to September, when outdoor terraces fill the squares and the INmusic Festival draws international acts to Jarun Lake each June. December is equally special — Zagreb's Advent market, repeatedly voted among Europe's best, transforms Ban Jelačić Square and the Upper Town into a festive wonderland. Spring and autumn bring comfortable driving temperatures and quieter campsites across the region. Book your campervan through Yescapa early for summer months, as this is the most popular season for exploring Croatia. Hiring outside peak periods often means more choice and better value from local owners on the platform.
Zagreb is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 80 km north from Zagreb to Varaždin, a baroque gem known for its beautifully preserved Old Town and Stari Grad fortress. Stop at Trakošćan Castle along the way, set above a tranquil lake. Allow 1–4 days to explore the Zagorje hills, where campervan-friendly parking is available near the castle grounds.
Just 55 km south-east of Zagreb, Samobor is famous for its kremšnita cream cake and the forested trails of Žumberak-Samoborsko Gorje Nature Park. Wander the town's pastel-coloured main square, then hike to the medieval Samobor Castle ruins. Compact campervans are ideal for the narrower roads through the park.
Drive 130 km south from Zagreb to reach Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 16 terraced lakes linked by waterfalls. Spend 3–6 days exploring the boardwalk trails and nearby Rastoke village. Several campsites with full motorhome hook-ups sit within a short drive of the park entrances.
Cover 175 km south-west from Zagreb to Rijeka, Croatia's largest port city on the Kvarner Gulf. Visit Trsat Castle for panoramic sea views and explore the bustling Korzo promenade. The A1 and A6 motorways make the journey smooth for larger motorhomes, and coastal campsites around Opatija offer seaside pitches.
The 395 km drive south-east from Zagreb to Dubrovnik follows the Adriatic coastline through some of Croatia's most scenic stretches. Pause at Makarska for its pebble beaches and Ston for its medieval walls. Plan 5–8 days and book campsites ahead in summer, as Dalmatian pitches are popular with touring travellers.
Travel 270 km south-east from Zagreb to Split, where Diocletian's Palace anchors a lively waterfront. Break the journey at Šibenik to see St James's Cathedral, another UNESCO site. Allow 5–8 days to enjoy the Dalmatian coast at your own pace, with well-signed campervan service points along the route.

The area around Zagreb offers a mix of countryside and lakeside campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal and modern shower blocks. Within the city itself, options are limited, but several well-equipped sites sit in the surrounding towns and along the route towards the Plitvice Lakes, giving you easy access to Zagreb while enjoying a quieter overnight setting.
Zagreb operates a zoned parking system, with the central area divided into three colour-coded zones — red (one-hour limit), yellow (two hours) and green (three hours). Larger vehicles should look for dedicated car parks on the city's edges, as many inner streets have height or width restrictions. Overnight parking in public spaces is generally not permitted for motorhomes, so plan to use a campsite or designated area outside the centre.

Beyond happy with the whole experience. The motorhome was very comfy and had everything we needed for our little girls camping trip. More importantly the owners were extremely friendly and beyond helpful at all times with the vehicle, the routes, the airport pickups and dropp offs and many many more things! All and all very happy with this experience!
