Western Austria's Grossglockner High Alpine Road climbs to 2,504 metres, making it the highest surfaced mountain pass road in the country and one of Europe's most spectacular driving experiences. From the medieval old town of Innsbruck, framed by the Nordkette mountain range, to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Zell am See roughly 180 km to the east, this part of Austria rewards you with an ever-changing backdrop of peaks, valleys and alpine meadows. The region spans the provinces of Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Salzburgerland, each with its own character. You can wander through Bregenz on the shores of Lake Constance, explore the Swarovski Crystal Worlds near Wattens, or follow the Arlberg Pass road that connects Vorarlberg to Tyrol across 1,793 metres of elevation. The Inn Valley offers wide, well-maintained roads ideal for larger vehicles, while narrower routes into side valleys such as the Ötztal or Zillertal bring you closer to traditional alpine villages. Distances are manageable — Innsbruck to Bludenz is around 155 km — so you can cover a lot without long driving days. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across western Austria, giving you the flexibility to pick up a vehicle close to your starting point. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for winding mountain roads or a fully equipped motorhome for a family holiday, the peer-to-peer model means more choice and often better value than traditional hire.
The best time to hire a campervan in western Austria runs from late May to early October, when high alpine passes like the Grossglockner and Silvretta are open to traffic. June is ideal for quieter roads and wildflower-covered meadows, while July and August bring warm temperatures and lively festivals such as the Bregenzer Festspiele on Lake Constance. September rewards you with golden larch forests and fewer fellow travellers. Most mountain campsites in western Austria open from mid-May, so booking early for summer through Yescapa gives you the widest choice of motorhomes and campervans from local owners — often at friendlier prices than peak-season commercial hire.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This 180 km loop links Bregenz on Lake Constance with the Arlberg Pass via the Klostertal valley. Stop in Feldkirch's medieval centre and Bludenz before climbing to 1,793 m. Well-suited to campervans, with lakeside and valley campsites throughout Vorarlberg.
A 150 km route along the Inn Valley from Innsbruck westward to Landeck, passing Hall in Tirol and the Swarovski Crystal Worlds near Wattens. Broad valley roads make this an easy drive in a motorhome, with plenty of service stops along the way.
Covering 320 km from Salzburg through the Salzkammergut to Zell am See, this route takes in Wolfgangsee, the Krimml Waterfalls and the Pinzgau valley. Campsites with lake access are plentiful, and the mix of open valleys and alpine scenery suits both campervans and motorhomes.
This 380 km circuit crosses the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and the Gerlos Pass, linking Zell am See with Lienz and looping back through the Zillertal. Expect dramatic mountain panoramas and well-placed rest areas across western Austria. Best in a campervan for tighter hairpins.
Spanning 550 km from Bregenz to Salzburg, this route threads through Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburgerland. Highlights include the Silvretta High Alpine Road, Innsbruck's Altstadt and the Hohe Tauern National Park. A motorhome gives you comfort for the longer driving days.
At 620 km, this grand loop from Innsbruck circles through Bregenz, the Arlberg, Kitzbühel and the Grossglockner before returning via the Brenner corridor. Allow 10–15 days to enjoy lakeside stops, alpine villages and mountain passes at a relaxed pace in your campervan or motorhome.

Western Austria offers campsites spread from the shores of Lake Constance in Vorarlberg to the alpine lakes of Salzburgerland. Many sites sit beside rivers or lakes and provide full hook-ups, modern shower blocks and dedicated motorhome service areas. Whether you are parking a compact campervan in a mountain valley or settling a larger motorhome by a lake, you will find pitches designed for both. Booking ahead is worthwhile in July and August, especially around popular areas like Zell am See and the Zillertal.
In western Austria you need a toll vignette for all motorways and expressways — available as a digital vignette online or at petrol stations. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes use the GO-Box system instead. Motorhomes and campervans under 3.5 tonnes follow the same speed limits as cars: 130 km/h on motorways and 100 km/h on dual carriageways. Heavier vehicles are limited to 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on rural roads. Some alpine routes, including the Grossglockner and Arlberg Tunnel, charge separate tolls. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome service points appear regularly along the A12 and A14 corridors through the Inn Valley and Vorarlberg.
Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️
Zeben was the most amazing and helpful host, always there if needed. The van has the perfect setup and it’s the best way to spend time on the island. Could not recommend more!
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))
