Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Utrecht

Utrecht — a region worth exploring

Utrecht province holds the distinction of being the smallest province in the Netherlands yet one of the most historically layered, with the city of Utrecht itself founded as a Roman fortress called Trajectum around 47 AD. From the iconic Dom Tower — the tallest church tower in the Netherlands at 112 metres — to the serene Loosdrecht Lakes, this compact province packs remarkable variety into a small area. The distance from Utrecht city to Amersfoort is just 25 km, while a drive from Rhenen in the south to Hilversum in the north covers roughly 50 km, making it wonderfully manageable by campervan. The Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a forested ridge of glacial hills, offers some of the most elevated terrain in the otherwise flat Dutch landscape, with cycling and walking trails winding through estates like Kasteel de Haar and the gardens of Slot Zuylen. Along the Vecht river, you can follow a route lined with 17th-century country houses, while the fortifications of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — trace a fascinating military history across the province. For those exploring by motorhome, the well-maintained roads and short distances between towns make Utrecht province ideal for a relaxed itinerary. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners based across the province, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit everything from a weekend escape to a longer Dutch adventure.

Best time to visit

Late spring through early autumn is the prime window for exploring Utrecht province by campervan. May brings the colourful Utrecht Flower Parade in Breukelen, while King's Day on 27 April fills every town with orange-clad celebrations and open-air markets. Summer months offer the longest days and the best conditions for kayaking on the Loosdrecht Lakes or cycling the Utrechtse Heuvelrug trails. Autumn rewards you with golden beech forests across the ridge. Campsites throughout the province are generally open from April to October, with the widest availability in July and August. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer often means more competitive hire prices from local owners.

Motorways such as the A2, A12, and A28 converge near Utrecht city, making it one of the best-connected provinces in the country. The national speed limit on motorways is 100 km/h during the day (06:00–19:00) and 120 or 130 km/h at night, though motorhomes over 3,500 kg are limited to 80 km/h on most roads and 90 km/h on motorways. Grazie mille Lorenzo! Alla prossima :)
