Thuringia's Rennsteig trail stretches 169 kilometres along the ridge of the Thuringian Forest, making it Germany's oldest and most popular long-distance hiking path. This central German state packs a remarkable amount into a compact area — from the medieval Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Martin Luther translated the New Testament, to the elegant Bauhaus city of Weimar, just 110 km to the east. In between, you can explore the well-preserved old town of Erfurt with its Krämerbrücke (the longest inhabited bridge in Europe), wander through the Hainich National Park (another UNESCO site protecting ancient beech forest), or follow the winding Saale Valley past the Bleiloch Reservoir, Germany's largest artificial lake. The landscape is ideal for touring by campervan: gently rolling hills, well-maintained B-roads, and short distances between towns mean you can cover a lot without long motorway stints. Erfurt to Jena is only 50 km, so you can easily hop between cultural highlights and natural escapes in a single day. Thuringia also rewards slower exploration — forest-lined routes through the Thuringian Highlands offer peaceful overnight spots and panoramic viewpoints. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the region, giving you the flexibility to collect your vehicle in Erfurt, Jena, or smaller towns and set off on your own schedule.
May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Thuringia. The Thuringia Bach Festival in spring brings world-class music to churches and concert halls across the region, while the Weimar Onion Market in October draws hundreds of thousands of visitors for one of Germany's oldest folk festivals. Summer offers the longest days for hiking the Rennsteig or cycling along the Saale, and most campsites in Thuringia are fully open from April through to late October. Shoulder months like May and September are particularly rewarding — fewer visitors, comfortable temperatures, and better availability. With Yescapa, you can often find more competitive hire rates outside the peak summer weeks, thanks to flexible pricing set by individual owners.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This 180 km loop links Erfurt, Weimar, and Jena — three of Thuringia's most culturally rich cities. Explore the Krämerbrücke, visit the Bauhaus Museum, and stroll through Jena's botanical garden. Short distances make it ideal for a campervan at a relaxed pace.
Follow 150 km through the heart of the Thuringian Forest, passing Oberhof and Neustadt am Rennsteig. This route shadows Germany's famous ridge trail, with forest campsites and sweeping views. Well suited to compact campervans on winding mountain roads.
A 280 km route taking in the Wartburg in Eisenach, the Drei Gleichen castle ensemble near Arnstadt, and the hilltop Leuchtenburg above the Saale Valley. Allow time for guided tours and nearby woodland walks. Motorhome parking is available at most castle sites.
Covering 350 km, this Thuringia route traces the Saale River from Saalfeld south to the Bleiloch and Hohenwarte reservoirs, then loops back through Rudolstadt. Waterside campsites offer hook-ups for motorhomes, and the roads are smooth and well maintained.
This 520 km circuit covers the best of Thuringia — from Erfurt to the Hainich National Park, south through Eisenach and the Thuringian Forest, then east to Gera. A mix of cities, forests, and open countryside with plenty of campsite options along the way.
At 600 km, this extended route crosses from Thuringia into the Harz mountains, visiting Nordhausen and the Brocken before returning via Mühlhausen. Expect varied terrain from dense forest to open highland. Ideal for a longer campervan or motorhome adventure.

Thuringia offers a good spread of campsites, from lakeside spots in the lowlands to forest-framed pitches in the Thuringian Highlands. Most sites cater to both campervans and motorhomes with electrical hook-ups, fresh water, and waste disposal. Several are open year-round, and many sit close to hiking trails or cycle paths, making them perfect bases for exploring Thuringia's natural landscapes.
Germany's motorways are toll-free for campervans and motorhomes under 7.5 tonnes, so you can travel Thuringia's A4 and A71 without extra cost. The A71 through the Thuringian Forest includes the impressive Rennsteig Tunnel, one of Germany's longest road tunnels at over 7.9 km. On the autobahn, there is no general speed limit for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h, and those under 3.5 tonnes to 130 km/h (recommended). Many of Thuringia's most scenic routes are on well-surfaced B-roads winding through forests and valleys, perfectly suited to smaller campervans. Rest areas with facilities are well signposted along major routes.
Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️
Zeben was the most amazing and helpful host, always there if needed. The van has the perfect setup and it’s the best way to spend time on the island. Could not recommend more!
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))
