Why choose Thessaloniki for your road trip

Thessaloniki — a city worth exploring

Thessaloniki's White Tower, built by the Ottomans in the 15th century, has stood guard over the Thermaic Gulf for more than 500 years and remains the city's most recognisable landmark. Greece's second-largest city rewards you with a walkable waterfront stretching over 5 km, lined with cafés, sculptures and open-air gathering spots. History is layered everywhere — the Rotunda of Galerius dates back to 306 AD, while the UNESCO-listed Byzantine churches of Thessaloniki form one of Europe's most important collections of early Christian art. For food lovers, Modiano Market offers a sensory feast of spices, olives and freshly caught fish under one roof. Head 33 km south-east to the seaside town of Perea for a relaxed beach day, or drive 75 km south-west to the royal tombs of Vergina, where Philip II of Macedon was laid to rest. The coastal roads around the Thermaic Gulf are wide and well-maintained, making them comfortable for larger vehicles. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in Thessaloniki, which means flexible pick-up points across the city and personal tips on the best routes through northern Greece. It is a practical, community-driven way to begin exploring Macedonia and beyond from a city that blends ancient heritage with a lively, modern character.

Best time to visit

Thessaloniki is enjoyable year-round. May and June bring warm, sunny days ideal for campervan touring along the Halkidiki coastline. The Thessaloniki International Film Festival in November fills the city with cultural energy, while the Dimitria Festival in October offers music, theatre and dance. Summer is the most popular season, so booking your Yescapa motorhome early secures the widest choice and best rates from local owners. Spring and autumn reward you with quieter campsites and comfortable driving temperatures across northern Greece. Thessaloniki's mild winters also suit city-focused breaks.

Top getaways from Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways

Thessaloniki to Vergina

75km southwest 1–4 days

Drive 75 km south-west from Thessaloniki to Vergina, home to the royal tombs of ancient Macedon. Visit the Museum of the Royal Tombs to see Philip II's golden larnax, then explore the ancient palace ruins at nearby Palatitsia. Allow 1–4 days and park easily at the museum's spacious car park, which suits campervans.

Thessaloniki to Kassandra

90km southeast 2–4 days

Head 90 km south-east from Thessaloniki to Kassandra, Halkidiki's westernmost peninsula. Stop at Nea Potidea to walk the old canal, then continue to Kallithea for sandy beaches and waterfront tavernas. A 2–4 day trip works well, and most coastal campsites offer full hook-ups for motorhomes.

Thessaloniki to Sithonia

130km southeast 3–6 days

Cover 130 km south-east from Thessaloniki to reach Sithonia, Halkidiki's middle finger. Swim at Kavourotrypes beach and visit the fishing village of Porto Koufo, Greece's deepest natural harbour. Plan 3–6 days to enjoy the pine-fringed coast, and book campervan pitches early in summer.

Thessaloniki to Meteora

170km west 3–6 days

Travel 170 km west from Thessaloniki to Meteora, where six monasteries perch atop towering sandstone pillars. Stop in Kalambaka for panoramic views and explore the quieter Ypapanti Monastery trail. Allow 3–6 days; designated parking areas near the monasteries accommodate larger vehicles comfortably.

Thessaloniki to Skiathos

260km southeast 5–8 days

Journey 260 km south-east from Thessaloniki to the port of Volos, then catch a ferry to Skiathos. Stroll Papadiamantis Street and swim at Lalaria Beach. A 5–8 day campervan trip lets you explore the Pelion coast en route; secure parking is available at Volos port for your vehicle.

Thessaloniki to Pelion

300km south 5–8 days

Drive 300 km south from Thessaloniki to the Pelion peninsula, a region of chestnut forests and stone villages. Wander the cobbled paths of Makrinitsa and cool off at Fakistra Beach. Spend 5–8 days discovering the area; motorhome-friendly campsites at Kala Nera offer shaded pitches by the sea.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a larger vehicle in central Thessaloniki requires a bit of planning. Street parking in the old town is tight, so purpose-built car parks near the waterfront are your best option. Overnight parking in public spaces is generally tolerated but not officially permitted, so we recommend heading to a nearby campsite for the night. Always check height barriers before entering underground or covered car parks, as many have a 2 m limit.

  • Parking Nea Paralia, 1km south — Large open-air car park along the new waterfront promenade, convenient for visiting the White Tower and the seaside walkway. Spaces can fill quickly at weekends.
  • Parking Port of Thessaloniki, 2km west — Spacious port-area car park with good clearance for taller vehicles. Handy if you are catching a ferry or exploring the nearby Ladadika district.
  • Parking IKEA Thessaloniki, 10km southeast — Large retail car park on the eastern outskirts of the city with generous bay sizes. Useful as a short stop before heading towards Halkidiki.

The RV and Oscar were great.

Gonçalo was great before and during the hire wandering all our questions super quickly. The van was great taking us around northern Portugal and Spain. For future hires, the van could do with a couple extra bits to improve the experience but aware it’s a new listing to Yescapa so will only improve with time!

Helen

We had nearly two weeks in Christine’s van as we went and discovered the area of Mayenne chateau Gontier for just over one week for a cycling festival and then Mayenne itself to view tight rope walkers at chateau lassay and enjoy some further cyclists. Christine was friendly and communicated very well considering we are a British couple hiring a van in France.

Patricia and Jorge were great, waiting at the airport when we arived and waiting 30mins at the return when we took a wrong turn. Helpful and friendly. Signed off the return easily and quickly. The van has character and plenty of Km but it was in perfect running order. I'd have no problem hiring from them again.

Frederick was lovely and the van was super. A lot of storage for a van plus a screen that separates the toilet from the shower which is much less of a mess. Big fridge and good cooking area and sink. The water pressure is very good so when you shower you get a really good pressure, having said that prepare to top up your water tank frequently. Lovely trip and a really well equipped and user friendly van layout would rent again!
