Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Tasmania

Tasmania — a region worth exploring

Tasmania's Overland Track stretches 65 kilometres through the heart of the Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park, making it one of Australia's most celebrated multi-day walks. Beyond the trails, the island state packs an extraordinary variety of landscapes into a compact area — the drive from Hobart to Launceston covers just 200 kilometres, yet you pass through farmland, heritage towns and dense eucalyptus forest along the way. Freycinet National Park is home to Wineglass Bay, a crescent of white sand framed by pink granite peaks, while the Tarkine rainforest in the north-west shelters some of the oldest temperate rainforest on Earth. Head west and you reach Strahan, the gateway to the Gordon River and the wild, World Heritage–listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. From Hobart to Cradle Mountain the distance is roughly 300 kilometres, a route that reveals how quickly Tasmania shifts from coastal city life to rugged highland wilderness. The roads are generally well-maintained and suit both campervans and larger motorhomes, though winding mountain sections add character to every journey. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Tasmania, choosing from a range of vehicles that match your travel style and group size. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to explore an island built for road trips.

Best time to visit

Summer, from December to February, is the most popular time to hire a campervan in Tasmania, with long daylight hours and warm temperatures ideal for coastal drives and national park visits. The Festival of Voices in Hobart each July draws music lovers during the cooler months, while the Taste of Tasmania food festival runs over the New Year period. Autumn, from March to May, brings vivid foliage across the highlands and quieter roads. With Yescapa's peer-to-peer model, you often find more competitive pricing outside peak season, and booking a motorhome in spring or autumn gives you excellent conditions with greater campsite availability across Tasmania.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Tasmania

Tasmania has no toll roads, so you can travel freely without worrying about extra charges. The speed limit on open highways is generally 110 km/h for cars, but if your motorhome or campervan exceeds 4.5 tonnes, a limit of 90 km/h applies on most roads. Major routes such as the Midland Highway (National Highway 1) between Hobart and Launceston are well-sealed dual carriageways in parts, while rural and west-coast roads tend to be narrower and windier. Rest areas with basic facilities are spaced regularly along main corridors, and overtaking lanes appear on steeper sections to keep traffic flowing.
