Why choose Strasbourg for your road trip

Strasbourg — a city worth exploring

Strasbourg's Grande Île, the historic city centre encircled by the River Ill, became the first entire urban district to be classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. From the towering Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, whose astronomical clock draws crowds daily at half past noon, to the pastel half-timbered houses of Petite France, the city rewards slow exploration on foot and on water. The Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain showcases works from Monet to Buren along the waterfront, while the Parc de l'Orangerie — the oldest park in the city — offers green space and a small zoo ideal for families. Strasbourg also serves as the official seat of the European Parliament, lending it a distinctly international atmosphere. Colmar lies just 75 km to the south along the Alsace Wine Route, and the Black Forest town of Baden-Baden is only 55 km to the north-east across the German border, making Strasbourg a superb base for cross-border touring. The flat terrain of the Rhine plain and well-maintained roads through the surrounding vineyards suit larger vehicles comfortably. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in and around Strasbourg, which means flexible pick-up points, personal tips on the best routes through Alsace, and competitive pricing compared with traditional hire depots. Whether you are tracing the wine route south or heading into Germany for the day, a campervan trip from Strasbourg puts two countries within easy reach.

Best time to visit

Strasbourg is wonderful year-round, with each season offering something special. The famous Christkindelsmärik, one of Europe's oldest Christmas markets, fills the city centre from late November through December and is a magical experience from a cosy campervan base. Summer brings the Festival de Musique de Strasbourg in June, plus long daylight hours for exploring the Alsace Wine Route. Spring and autumn are ideal for quieter campsite availability and gentle driving weather. Book your Yescapa motorhome early for the Christmas market period, as it is the most popular season. Peer-to-peer hire through Yescapa often means better value than traditional depots in Strasbourg.

Where to park your motorhome

Strasbourg operates a strong park-and-ride (P+R) network that welcomes larger vehicles, making it easy to leave your campervan or motorhome on the outskirts and hop on a tram into the centre. Overnight parking in the city centre is restricted for vehicles over 1.9 m in height, so using a P+R site or a dedicated motorhome aire is the most practical option. Always check signage for height barriers before entering any car park.

  • P+R Elsau, 4km southwest — Located on the south-western edge of Strasbourg near tram line A. Flat, open-air layout suitable for larger vehicles. Affordable day rates with a tram ticket included.
  • P+R Rotonde, 3km south — Situated close to the main railway station on the western side. Convenient for city-centre access via a short tram ride. Check height restrictions before entry.
  • P+R Hoenheim Gare, 7km north — Found on the northern outskirts at the terminus of tram line B. Spacious surface car park with good availability. Ideal for motorhomes heading in from the A4 motorway.

We rented the van for almost 3 weeks and we had a lovely time exploring Spain. The van has everything we needed and working properly. It’s spacious and comfortable for two to sleep. We were a bit worried about the heatwave the country was having and Jeremie managed to buy a double fan for us to sleep, which we highly appreciated. He is very friendly and good with communicating. The van runs smoothly, we just had a message on the screen to top up the oil (which was easy enough to stop at the petrol station and buy one - with Jeremie instructions we were able to do it). We really recommend renting his van for your adventure. ☺️

It was a genuine pleasure travelling in Álvaro’s campervan. Not only was it well maintained and fully equipped, but Álvaro also proved to be an exceptional host—friendly, responsive, and always willing to help. His support played a key role in ensuring that the trip went as smoothly as possible. I would recommend him without hesitation and sincerely hope to have the opportunity to repeat the experience. Thank you very much for everything!
