Stockholm spreads across 14 islands connected by 57 bridges where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea, making it one of the most water-rich capitals in the world. The medieval old town, Gamla Stan, dates back to the 13th century and is home to the Royal Palace, one of Europe's largest royal residences with over 600 rooms. You can wander through the Vasa Museum to see the remarkably preserved 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, or explore the open-air Skansen museum, the world's oldest of its kind, founded in 1891. The ABBA Museum on Djurgården island offers an interactive journey through Swedish pop history, while Fotografiska, just south of the city centre, is one of the world's largest photography galleries. Nearby destinations are easy to reach — Uppsala lies just 70 km to the north, and the coastal town of Nynäshamn sits 58 km to the south, serving as a gateway to Gotland. The city's waterfront roads and well-maintained motorways make it a comfortable starting point for a motorhome adventure. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners in and around Stockholm, giving you flexible pick-up options and personal tips from people who know the area best. Whether you are heading into the archipelago or setting off towards the Swedish countryside, Stockholm is a brilliant base for your next campervan road trip.
Stockholm is at its finest from May to September, when long daylight hours let you make the most of every stop. The Stockholm Culture Festival in August fills the city with free concerts and performances, while Midsommar celebrations in late June bring traditional festivities across the region. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa early gives you the widest choice from local owners at competitive peer-to-peer prices. Autumn brings golden colours to the parks and forests, ideal for quieter motorhome touring with fewer crowds at campsites. Even winter has its charm — Stockholm's Christmas markets run from late November, and crisp, clear days reward those who explore off-peak.
Stockholm is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 70 km north from Stockholm to Uppsala, Sweden's oldest university city. Visit Uppsala Cathedral, Scandinavia's largest church, and the Linnaeus Garden, created by the famous botanist. The E4 motorway is smooth and well-suited to campervans, with several rest stops along the way offering easy parking for larger vehicles.
Set off 60 km east from Stockholm into the archipelago, a maze of around 30,000 islands and skerries. Take the ferry from Stavsnäs to Sandhamn for sailing culture, or explore Vaxholm's fortress and waterfront. Motorhome parking is available at mainland ferry terminals, making island-hopping straightforward.
Drive 150 km south-west from Stockholm to Norrköping, a former industrial city with a revitalised waterfront. Stop at Kolmården Wildlife Park along the way and explore the Industrilandskapet district with its converted mills. Campervan-friendly campsites are plentiful near the Bråviken coastline.
Travel 190 km west from Stockholm to Örebro, where a medieval castle sits on an island in the Svartån river. Break the journey at Arboga, one of Sweden's oldest towns, and visit Wadköping open-air museum in Örebro. Motorhome service points are well signposted along the E18 and E20 routes.
Head 290 km south from Stockholm into Småland, the heartland of Swedish glassmaking. Visit the Glasriket glass factories near Nybro and explore Astrid Lindgren's World in Vimmerby. The route follows the E4 before branching into quieter country roads — ideal for a campervan at a relaxed pace.
Cover 460 km south-west from Stockholm to Gothenburg along the E4 and E20. Stop at Jönköping on the shores of Lake Vättern and Borås for its textile heritage. This cross-country trip suits a full week, with well-equipped campsites and service areas for campervans dotted along the entire route.

Stockholm and its surrounding areas offer a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. You will find sites with full electrical hook-ups, service points for fresh water and waste disposal, as well as modern shower and toilet blocks. Several sites sit close to the waterfront, giving you easy access to swimming and nature walks. Whether you prefer a city-edge location for sightseeing or a lakeside spot for a quieter stay, the Stockholm region has you covered.
Parking a larger vehicle in Stockholm requires a bit of planning. The city centre has height and length restrictions on many car parks, so look for facilities that specifically accept motorhomes or taller vehicles. Overnight parking on public streets is generally not permitted for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes without a special permit. Outside the congestion charge zone, you will find more spacious options. Always check signage for time limits and fees before leaving your vehicle.
I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)
Inigio and his lovely girlfriend looked after Dolly for one week here in the Algarve area. They brought her back clean and in really good shape. Before and during the rental period we had a very good dialogue. I can highly reccomend them to lend your car. :-)
Our trip was fantastic, couldn't recommend travelling Sicily via Camper further. Angela and Luca made that super easy with clear comms and help pre booking, during holiday and after. pick up and drop off was a breeze. Clear instructions on how to use the van. All in all great trip.
Fabio made the whole process super easy and was very flexible with our plans. The van was perfect. Practically brand new and had all we needed.
Fantastic experience. Raul really went above and beyond to help us out and was always responsive with any queries we had. The van was in excellent condition, had everything we needed, and was ideal for our trip into the Pyrenees, plus heading south for the solar eclipse. Would highly recommend.
Very helpful owner and great vehicle! Had a great time in the Mundaka.
