The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
São Miguel stretches across 759 square kilometres, making it the largest island in the Azores archipelago and home to roughly half the region's population. From the twin-cratered Sete Cidades lake — where blue and green waters sit side by side inside a volcanic caldera — to the steaming fumaroles of Furnas, the island rewards slow, winding exploration. The drive from Ponta Delgada on the south coast to Nordeste at the island's eastern tip covers around 80 km of lush, hedge-lined roads, while the western loop out to Sete Cidades is roughly 30 km of switchbacks with panoramic viewpoints at every turn. Tea plantations at Gorreana, one of the only working tea estates in Europe, sit just a short detour from the surf beaches of Ribeira Grande on the north shore. Lagoa do Fogo, a pristine crater lake inside a nature reserve, offers one of the most rewarding short hikes on the island. Narrow mountain roads and single-lane bridges mean a campervan is often the smartest choice here — compact enough to navigate tight corners yet kitted out for overnight stays beside the ocean or in quiet rural spots. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across São Miguel, choosing from a range of campervans and motorhomes that suit the island's roads and your travel style. It is a practical, personal way to discover an island built for life at a gentler pace.
São Miguel enjoys a mild oceanic climate year-round, making it a genuine four-season destination for campervan travel. May to September brings the driest weather and longest days — ideal for crater-lake hikes and coastal swims. June hosts the Festas do Santo Cristo dos Milagres in Ponta Delgada, the island's biggest religious celebration, drawing visitors from across the Azorean diaspora. Autumn is quieter, with warm sea temperatures lingering into October. Through Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside peak summer, as local owners set their own prices. Book spring or early autumn for a rewarding balance of pleasant weather and open roads across São Miguel.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 80 km loop from Ponta Delgada heads west to the Sete Cidades caldera and its famous twin lakes, then circles back via Mosteiros and its natural ocean pools. Compact campervans handle the narrow crater-rim roads with ease. Allow 3–5 days to enjoy each viewpoint at your own pace.
A relaxed 50 km route exploring the geothermal heart of São Miguel. Soak in the iron-rich pools at Poça da Dona Beija, watch cozido stew cook underground at Lagoa das Furnas, and wander the botanical gardens at Terra Nostra Park. Perfect for 3–6 unhurried days in a campervan.
Circle all of São Miguel across 130 km, linking Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, and Nordeste. The route takes in Lagoa do Fogo, the Gorreana tea plantation, and the dramatic cliffs of Ponta da Madrugada. A motorhome with a kitchen makes 5–8 days comfortable and self-sufficient.
This 110 km itinerary connects São Miguel's finest miradouros, from Vista do Rei above Sete Cidades to Pico do Ferro overlooking Furnas. Wind through Achada, Povoação, and the flower-lined lanes of Nordeste. Ideal for photography lovers — allow 5–8 days to catch the best light.
Spanning 160 km, this route traverses São Miguel's lush interior from west to east. Pass through dense laurel forest near Sete Cidades, climb to Lagoa do Fogo, and descend to the remote valleys around Faial da Terra. Both campervans and motorhomes suit the journey over 7–11 days.
Take 10–15 days to cover 180 km and truly settle into island life. Linger at whale-watching spots in Vila Franca do Campo, explore the pineapple greenhouses of Fajã de Baixo, and swim at Praia dos Moinhos. A motorhome gives you the freedom to stay longer wherever you please.

São Miguel offers a handful of well-placed campsites spread from the cosmopolitan south coast to the rural interior. Most provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, and waste disposal suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Coastal sites near Ponta Delgada give easy access to restaurants and ferry terminals, while inland options close to Furnas and Sete Cidades put you right beside the island's volcanic landscapes. Facilities are straightforward rather than luxurious — expect clean shower blocks, picnic areas, and friendly local management.
São Miguel has no motorways or toll roads, so you can explore the entire island without worrying about toll charges. The main regional roads (ERs) connect Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, and Nordeste, with speed limits generally set at 50 km/h in towns and 90 km/h on open stretches. Many inland routes are narrow, winding mountain roads where passing places are marked — take your time, especially in a larger motorhome. Fuel stations are found in every main town but can be sparse in the rural east, so fill up before heading towards Nordeste or Sete Cidades.
Muchas gracias. Gary y Michelle
Lovely experience and fantastic van. Clean and worked very well. Leonardo and Eleanora were very friendly and helpful. One small feedback is the fridge did not work very well but otherwise its a great van.
Muy buena experiencia. Ana nos ha tratado muy bien.
Proprietários espetaculares e super atenciosos. Autocaravana estava impecável, super confortável, excelente condução. Painéis solares dão autonomia total. Tudo impecável.
We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!
We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.
