Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Saarland

Saarland — a region worth exploring

Saarland is Germany's smallest federal state by area, yet it packs in over 350 kilometres of well-signposted cycling and walking trails that double as scenic driving routes through dense forests and rolling hills. The famous Saarschleife, a dramatic horseshoe bend of the River Saar near Mettlach, is one of Germany's most photographed natural landmarks and a must-see from the Cloef viewpoint. From Saarbrücken, the state capital, to the Bostalsee lake in the north, you cover just 60 kilometres — making Saarland wonderfully compact for a campervan trip. Head east and within 45 kilometres you reach the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau, where orchid meadows and beech forests create a landscape unlike anywhere else in western Germany. The Völklinger Hütte, a UNESCO World Heritage ironworks, stands as a remarkable monument to industrial history, while the baroque Ludwigskirche in Saarbrücken ranks among the finest Protestant churches in the country. Saarland's size is a genuine advantage when you travel by motorhome: short distances between stops mean more time exploring and less time on the road. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners across the region, giving you flexible pick-up options and a personal introduction to the area. Whether you are drawn to riverside routes, forest trails, or cultural landmarks, Saarland rewards those who take the time to slow down and look closer.

Best time to visit

May to October is ideal for a campervan trip through Saarland, with long daylight hours and mild temperatures perfect for outdoor exploring. The Emmes festival in Saarbrücken each September celebrates local food, music, and culture across the city centre. In June, the Saar Spectacle lights up the river with fireworks and festivities. Campsites across Saarland are fully open from spring through autumn, and pitches beside lakes like the Bostalsee are especially popular in July and August — booking ahead is worthwhile. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer hire often means better value outside peak summer, so consider a late-spring or early-autumn trip for quieter roads and great availability.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Saarland

Saarland's motorways are toll-free, as is the entire German Autobahn network, so you can travel without worrying about vignettes or toll booths. The A1, A6, and A620 connect Saarbrücken to neighbouring regions and make getting around straightforward. On unrestricted Autobahn sections, motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 100 km/h, while those under 3.5 tonnes may travel up to 130 km/h where advisory limits apply. Many of Saarland's most scenic routes follow B-roads (Bundesstraßen) through forests and river valleys — these are well-maintained and suitable for larger vehicles, though some stretches are single carriageway.

Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️

We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!

The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
