Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Pyrenees

Pyrenees — a region worth exploring

The Pyrénées stretch roughly 430 km from the Atlantic coast at Hendaye to the Mediterranean shore near Collioure, forming a natural border between France and Spain that tops out at the Pic d'Aneto (3,404 m). Within this mountain chain you can explore the Cirque de Gavarnie, a UNESCO World Heritage amphitheatre of rock and ice, the Pont d'Espagne waterfalls above Cauterets, and the fortified citadel of Mont-Louis, the highest garrison town in France. From Pau to Perpignan the distance is about 310 km, while the drive from Bayonne to Foix covers around 280 km, giving you a sense of how much ground a single trip can cover. Roads here wind through deep valleys, over high passes such as the Col du Tourmalet (2,115 m), and along forested plateaux, so a compact campervan handles the tighter bends with ease while a larger motorhome is ideal for the broader valley routes and well-equipped aires. Wildlife fans can spot griffon vultures in the Ossau valley and Pyrenean chamois in the Néouvielle nature reserve. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners based across the Pyrénées — in towns like Tarbes, Pau, and Perpignan — so you can pick up a vehicle close to the route you want and set off without delay.

Best time to visit

June to September is the prime window for exploring the Pyrénées by campervan, when the high mountain passes — including the Col du Tourmalet and Col d'Aubisque — are fully open and campsites across the range operate at full capacity. July brings the Tour de France through the Pyrénées, a thrilling spectacle to witness from the roadside. In October, the Transhumance festival in the Ossau valley celebrates the return of flocks from summer pastures. Shoulder months like May and October suit lower-altitude routes and offer quieter roads. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer often means more competitive hire prices from local owners, so planning a spring or autumn trip can be a smart move.

The best road trips in Pyrenees

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Thermal Valleys Route

180 km 3–6 days

This 180 km loop links the spa towns of Cauterets, Luz-Saint-Sauveur, and Bagnères-de-Bigorre across the central Pyrénées. Allow 3–6 days to soak in hot springs, hike to the Pont d'Espagne waterfalls, and visit the Pic du Midi observatory. Well suited to a campervan on the narrower valley roads.

The Basque Country Circuit

220 km 3–6 days

A 220 km circuit through the western Pyrénées, taking in the colourful harbour of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the hilltop village of Espelette, famous for its red peppers. Over 3–6 days you can explore Bayonne's old quarter and the Rhune mountain railway. Plenty of well-serviced campsites dot the Basque coast.

The Great Cols Crossing

350 km 5–8 days

Tackle 350 km and some of the Pyrénées' most celebrated passes — the Col du Tourmalet, Col d'Aubisque, and Col du Soulor — over 5–8 days. Start in Pau and finish in Saint-Lary-Soulan. A motorhome-friendly route with spacious aires at valley stops, though the cols themselves reward a compact campervan.

The Cathar Castles and Southern Foothills

400 km 5–8 days

Follow 400 km through the eastern Pyrénées foothills over 5–8 days, visiting the clifftop fortresses of Montségur and Peyrepertuse and the walled city of Carcassonne. The route passes through Mirepoix's medieval square and the Gorges de Galamus. Roads are wide and well suited to both motorhomes and campervans.

The Coast-to-Coast Pyrénées Traverse

600 km 8–13 days

Spanning 600 km from Hendaye on the Atlantic to Collioure on the Mediterranean, this 8–13 day route is the ultimate Pyrénées road trip. Pass through Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Luchon, and Ax-les-Thermes. Municipal aires and campsites are spaced regularly, making it manageable in a campervan or motorhome.

The Ariège and Andorra Loop

550 km 7–11 days

A 550 km loop over 7–11 days exploring the Pyrénées' quieter eastern valleys. Visit the prehistoric cave art at Niaux, the mountain town of Ax-les-Thermes, and cross into Andorra for duty-free shopping and high-altitude scenery. Roads into Andorra are well maintained and suitable for most campervans.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Pyrenees

Most Pyrénées routes follow toll-free national and departmental roads rather than autoroutes. The A64, running from Bayonne to Toulouse along the northern foothills, is the main toll motorway; payment is by card or cash at barrier péages. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as category 2 and pay higher tolls. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 t are 110 km/h on autoroutes and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. Mountain passes such as the Col du Tourmalet and Col d'Aubisque have hairpin bends and occasional width restrictions, so check your vehicle height and length before setting off.
