Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Piedmont

Piedmont — a region worth exploring

Piedmont is home to over 50,000 hectares of UNESCO-listed vineyard landscapes across the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato hills, making it one of the most celebrated wine regions on the planet. Nestled in Italy's north-west corner, the region shares borders with France and Switzerland, and its geography ranges from the snow-dusted peaks of the Gran Paradiso massif to the gentle shores of Lake Maggiore. Turin, the elegant regional capital, sits roughly 150 km from the Mediterranean coast and about 130 km from Milan, placing you at a natural crossroads for exploration. Beyond the city, you can wind through the Susa Valley towards the French border, pause at the Sacra di San Michele perched on its rocky spur, or follow the rice paddies of the Vercelli plain — the largest rice-growing area in Europe. The region's well-maintained network of secondary roads is ideal for campervan travel, with gentle gradients through the hills and clearly signed scenic routes linking small towns and agriturismi. Mountain passes in the western Alps open up dramatic panoramas without the heavy traffic found on major motorways. With Yescapa, you hire your motorhome or campervan directly from local owners spread across Piedmont, giving you flexible pick-up points and a wide choice of vehicles suited to everything from alpine adventures to leisurely vineyard tours.

Best time to visit

Piedmont rewards you in every season. Late September and October bring the truffle season in Alba, when the International White Truffle Fair draws food lovers from around the world, and the vineyards blaze with autumn colour. Spring, from April to June, is perfect for exploring the Alps before the summer crowds arrive, with wildflower meadows and comfortable driving temperatures. Summer opens up the high mountain passes and lakeside campsites around Maggiore and Orta. Booking a campervan through Yescapa outside peak July and August lets you benefit from competitive peer-to-peer pricing while still enjoying long, warm days across Piedmont.

180 km 3–6 days

This 180 km loop winds through Piedmont's UNESCO-listed vineyard hills. Start in Alba, sample Barolo in its namesake village, then cross the Tanaro into the sandy Roero slopes near Canale. Ideal for campervans, with plenty of agriturismi offering overnight pitches.

The Northern Lakes Loop

150 km 3–5 days

A 150 km route linking Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore in northern Piedmont. Visit the island of San Giulio, then follow the western shore to Stresa and the Borromean Islands. Lakeside campsites with full hook-ups make this a relaxed motorhome-friendly trip.

The Alpine Piedmont Crossing

The Grand Monferrato Tour

400 km 5–8 days

A 400 km circuit through the rolling Monferrato hills of eastern Piedmont. From Asti, head to Casale Monferrato's Romanesque cathedral, then loop south through Acqui Terme's thermal springs. Quiet back roads and small-town aires suit both campervans and motorhomes.

The Royal Piedmont Circuit

550 km 7–11 days

This 550 km route connects Piedmont's royal residences and cultural highlights over 7–11 days. Start at Turin's Palazzo Reale, drive to the Venaria Reale, then head north to Ivrea and the Serra d'Ivrea moraine before returning via the Langhe vineyards.

The Grand Tour of Piedmont

600 km 10–15 days

At 600 km, this comprehensive Piedmont loop takes 10–15 days. Begin in Turin, travel north to Lake Maggiore, cross to the Valsesia, descend through the rice plains to Novara, then sweep south through Asti and Cuneo. A campervan gives you the freedom to linger at each stop.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Piedmont

Piedmont's motorway network centres on the A4 (Turin–Milan) and the A6 (Turin–Savona), both of which are toll roads. You pay at barriers using cash, card or a Telepass device. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed in a higher toll category, so keep your vehicle documents handy. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on dual carriageways and 100 km/h on motorways. Rest areas with dedicated campervan service points appear regularly along the A4 and A21. Mountain sections, particularly the A32 towards the Fréjus Tunnel, include long gradients and occasional height restrictions in tunnels — check your vehicle dimensions before setting off.

We had a fantastic experience hiring this campervan! It was very clean, well maintained and exactly as pictured. Alberto, the owner, was incredibly friendly and helpful, and was always happy to answer any questions we had. The campervan was perfect for the three people travelling in our party and had everything we needed for a comfortable trip. The heating, hot water and electricity all worked perfectly, and having a cooker and fridge meant we could easily prepare meals and store food. We would highly recommend this campervan to anyone looking for a trip away, and wouldn’t hesitate to hire it again. Thank you Alberto!

Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️

We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
