Overijssel is home to Giethoorn, a village with no roads where over 180 bridges connect thatched-roof farmhouses across a network of canals — earning it the nickname "Dutch Venice." This eastern Dutch province stretches from the Weerribben-Wieden National Park in the north, one of the largest freshwater wetlands in north-west Europe, down to the forested hills of Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park in the south. The distance from Steenwijk in the north to Ootmarsum in the south-east is roughly 95 km, while Zwolle, the provincial capital, sits just 110 km from Amsterdam, making it an easy starting point for your trip. Overijssel blends waterways, woodland and open farmland, creating routes that suit both campervans and larger motorhomes. The Hanseatic towns of Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle offer centuries-old merchant architecture, weekly markets and waterfront dining along the River IJssel. Further east, Twente's rolling countryside and textile heritage villages such as Enschede and Almelo provide a quieter pace. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Overijssel, choosing from a range of vehicles that match your group size and travel style. Because owners are spread throughout the province, you can pick up close to your planned route and start exploring straight away.
May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Overijssel, when long daylight hours and mild temperatures make canal-side stops and cycling detours a pleasure. The Deventer Boekenmarkt, held on the first Sunday in August, draws book lovers to one of Europe's largest open-air book fairs. In late June, the Ommen Bissingh festival celebrates local culture with music and food. Campsites across the province are fully open during summer, though spring and early autumn offer quieter pitches and lower hire rates. Booking through Yescapa outside peak months often means better availability and more competitive pricing from private owners in Overijssel.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 120 km route links the historic Hanseatic towns of Kampen, Zwolle and Deventer along the River IJssel. Allow 3–6 days to explore merchant houses, riverside promenades and weekly markets. Campervan-friendly stopovers with services are plentiful between towns.
At just 80 km, this 3–5 day loop through Overijssel's wetland heart takes you past Giethoorn's canal village and into Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Ideal for compact campervans, with waterside pitches and boat-hire stops along the way.
A 250 km circuit over 5–8 days combining Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park with the textile-heritage towns of Enschede and Almelo in Twente. Motorhomes and campervans both handle the well-surfaced provincial roads easily, with campsites dotted through the woodland sections.
Covering 300 km in 5–8 days, this route runs from Steenwijk in the west through Zwolle and on to Ootmarsum near the German border. You pass open polder landscapes, the Vechtdal valley and Twente's rolling hills — varied scenery with well-spaced motorhome service points.
This 450 km, 7–11 day loop extends south from Overijssel into the Veluwe, taking in Deventer, Apeldoorn's Het Loo Palace and Hoge Veluwe National Park before returning via the IJssel valley. A rewarding route for motorhome travellers who enjoy forests and heritage sites.
At 550 km over 8–15 days, this extended campervan journey traces Overijssel's eastern border, visiting Oldenzaal, Denekamp and the Dinkelland countryside before looping back through Hardenberg and the Vechtdal. Cross-border day trips into Lower Saxony add extra variety.

Overijssel offers a wide choice of campsites spread across its waterways, woodlands and open countryside. Whether you are travelling in a compact campervan or a full-size motorhome, you will find pitches with electric hook-ups, fresh-water points and waste-disposal facilities. Many sites in Overijssel sit beside rivers or lakes, giving you direct access to cycling and kayaking routes straight from your pitch.
Overijssel's motorways are toll-free, as are all roads in the Netherlands. The A28 runs north–south through the province, connecting Zwolle to Amersfoort, while the A1 crosses east–west linking Amersfoort to the German border near Oldenzaal. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on motorways. Well-signed service areas with fuel, parking and waste-disposal points appear regularly along major routes. Provincial roads through Twente and the Vechtdal are generally well-maintained and wide enough for larger vehicles, though some village centres have narrow stretches worth checking in advance.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))

Everything went great!!! The van is amazingly equipped, Sérgio is always available and kind, great experience!!
Very enjoyable experience, the van was very comfortable, well equipped..dealing with Yescapa was seamless and the van owners very friendly and helpful, they went out of their way for us.
This was an excellent campervan for our party of 4 adults (and can easily sleep 6). Everything we used in the van was great and worked well. The large fridge/freezer and awning was helpful. Toilet and shower worked well. João was great throughout the whole process. He was really quick and helpful in all his communications before the trip, and during check-in he was really thorough with explaining all of the van's systems (even though we didn't speak Portuguese). We had a minor accident, and João was very reasonable and fair about the repairs. All together a very good experience, thank you!
We had an absolutely fabulous stay in this van, Bruno met us at the ferry port and the process was very easy and smooth! The van was perfect and had everything we needed, Bruno went above and beyond and provided bedding towels etc it was fab!
