The New Forest was established as a royal hunting ground by William the Conqueror in 1079 and today covers 566 square kilometres of ancient woodland, open heathland, and coastal marshes across southern England. Free-roaming ponies, cattle, and donkeys wander freely through the landscape — a tradition of commoning that has continued for nearly a thousand years. From Lyndhurst, the unofficial capital, you can reach the Jurassic Coast at Lymington in just 16 km, while the drive from Brockenhurst to Fordingbridge spans roughly 27 km through some of the forest's most scenic stretches. Key landmarks include Beaulieu Motor Museum, Buckler's Hard historic shipbuilding village, Hurst Castle on its shingle spit, and the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive lined with towering redwoods and Douglas firs. The terrain is wonderfully suited to campervan travel, with gentle roads winding through open heathland and quiet villages, though some lanes narrow beneath canopy cover. Motorhome travellers will find well-maintained routes connecting the main towns and plenty of dedicated stopping points. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the New Forest and neighbouring Hampshire, giving you a wide choice of vehicles and the flexibility to start your trip right on the doorstep of this remarkable national park.
The New Forest is enjoyable year-round, with each season offering something distinctive. Late summer brings the New Forest Show in late July, a celebrated country fair with livestock, forestry displays, and local food. Autumn is ideal for watching the annual drift rounds, when commoners gather free-roaming ponies — a spectacle unique to the forest. Spring carpets the woodland floor with bluebells, while winter opens up long views across the heathland. Campervan hire through Yescapa tends to be more affordable outside the school holidays, and booking ahead for the New Forest in peak months ensures you secure the best vehicle from local owners.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The New Forest offers a fine range of campsites spread across woodland clearings, open heathland, and the southern coastal fringe. Forestry England operates several popular sites within the national park itself, many with electric hook-ups, toilet blocks, and waste disposal suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Private sites around the forest's edges tend to offer additional facilities such as showers, laundry, and on-site shops, making longer stays comfortable.
The New Forest sits between the M27 and the A31, both of which provide easy access from Southampton, Bournemouth, and beyond. There are no toll roads within the area. Speed limits across the open forest are strictly set at 40 mph to protect free-roaming animals, and many minor roads drop to 30 mph or lower. Motorhome drivers should note that some forest lanes are single-track with passing places, so larger vehicles are best kept to the main A-roads and B-roads linking Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, and Lymington. Roadside parking for campervans is available at designated car parks managed by Forestry England, though overnight stays in car parks are not permitted.
Had a wonderful trip! With Thibault’s guidance, you're in safe hands. This compact and comfortable van packs a big punch while remaining extremely easy to drive and park. I highly recommend this van and owner combo!
First let me say that Ricardo is a great owner, he was very good at explaining everything to us, gave advice on the trip and was always available to answer any questions we had. He even was understanding of our delayed return. 5/5 The van is as described in the ad, working perfectely, comfortable to drive worh all the amenities one would need in a van. We traveled all around portugal and overall enjoyed our time bery much. Definitely recommend.
Absolutely loved staying in Alfreds campervan. The decor was beautiful. It had everything we needed, a perfect space for two people for time in nature travelling. It was so good having a fridge on the road. He answered any questions I had and the pick up/ drop off was great. Would definitely love to rent it again in the future when we come back to Spain. Thank you!
Patrick was very friendly and went above and beyond his duty to make sure everything went smoothly. He even took us to the station after we dropped the van off. We would highly recommend him.
Foi tudo ótimo! Desde a efetivação do aluguer até ao momento da devolução e ainda depois.
Communication with Guillaume the owner was excellent. Always available to answer questions and give advice about travel destinations. The campervan was a perfect size for our first experience of this type of holiday. We used sites for our 7 night travel experience which worked well with electric/topping up water etc. Overall a great experience and would use this owner again.
