The New Forest was established as a royal hunting ground by William the Conqueror in 1079 and today covers 566 square kilometres of ancient woodland, open heathland, and coastal marshes across southern England. Free-roaming ponies, cattle, and donkeys wander freely through the landscape — a tradition of commoning that has continued for nearly a thousand years. From Lyndhurst, the unofficial capital, you can reach the Jurassic Coast at Lymington in just 16 km, while the drive from Brockenhurst to Fordingbridge spans roughly 27 km through some of the forest's most scenic stretches. Key landmarks include Beaulieu Motor Museum, Buckler's Hard historic shipbuilding village, Hurst Castle on its shingle spit, and the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive lined with towering redwoods and Douglas firs. The terrain is wonderfully suited to campervan travel, with gentle roads winding through open heathland and quiet villages, though some lanes narrow beneath canopy cover. Motorhome travellers will find well-maintained routes connecting the main towns and plenty of dedicated stopping points. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the New Forest and neighbouring Hampshire, giving you a wide choice of vehicles and the flexibility to start your trip right on the doorstep of this remarkable national park.
The New Forest is enjoyable year-round, with each season offering something distinctive. Late summer brings the New Forest Show in late July, a celebrated country fair with livestock, forestry displays, and local food. Autumn is ideal for watching the annual drift rounds, when commoners gather free-roaming ponies — a spectacle unique to the forest. Spring carpets the woodland floor with bluebells, while winter opens up long views across the heathland. Campervan hire through Yescapa tends to be more affordable outside the school holidays, and booking ahead for the New Forest in peak months ensures you secure the best vehicle from local owners.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Start in Lyndhurst and follow the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive through towering conifers before looping south to Brockenhurst and Beaulieu. This 50 km route suits campervans perfectly, with gentle roads and Forestry England car parks for daytime stops along the way.
Head from Lymington along the Solent coast to Keyhaven and Milford on Sea, then loop inland via Burley. At around 65 km, this New Forest route takes in Hurst Castle, salt marshes, and heathland, with campsites near the coast offering motorhome hook-ups.
Combine the New Forest with a drive west to the Jurassic Coast, passing through Christchurch and on to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. This 130 km route links two of southern England's finest landscapes, with well-equipped campervan sites at regular intervals.
From the New Forest, head north-east through Winchester — home to the Great Hall and its Round Table — then on to Jane Austen's Chawton and Selborne. This 180 km motorhome-friendly route follows wide A-roads and explores Hampshire's rich history beyond the forest.
Travel east from the New Forest through Southampton and Portsmouth, visiting the Historic Dockyard, then continue to Chichester and Arundel Castle. At 260 km, this campervan route follows the south coast with plentiful overnight stops and harbour-side scenery.

The New Forest offers a fine range of campsites spread across woodland clearings, open heathland, and the southern coastal fringe. Forestry England operates several popular sites within the national park itself, many with electric hook-ups, toilet blocks, and waste disposal suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Private sites around the forest's edges tend to offer additional facilities such as showers, laundry, and on-site shops, making longer stays comfortable.
The New Forest sits between the M27 and the A31, both of which provide easy access from Southampton, Bournemouth, and beyond. There are no toll roads within the area. Speed limits across the open forest are strictly set at 40 mph to protect free-roaming animals, and many minor roads drop to 30 mph or lower. Motorhome drivers should note that some forest lanes are single-track with passing places, so larger vehicles are best kept to the main A-roads and B-roads linking Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, and Lymington. Roadside parking for campervans is available at designated car parks managed by Forestry England, though overnight stays in car parks are not permitted.
We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!
We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.
We had a great experience hiring this motorhome. Everything went smoothly and we had absolutely zero issues throughout our trip. Fernando kept us informed about everything from the beginning and was very friendly and helpful. He was also very flexible with both the pickup and drop-off times, which made everything much easier. The location is perfect, especially if you're arriving via Prague Airport. We travelled all the way to Hungary and back to Poland, staying at several off-grid locations along the way. We had an amazing time at Lake Balaton in Hungary and also loved our stay at the Pod Opaleńcem campsite in Świeradów-Zdrój, Poland. We would definitely recommend this motorhome hire and would happily rent from Fernando again!
Had a great time renting Dario's van. The pick-up was smooth and we were off and driving very quickly. Would highly recommend!
We went for a 7 days trip with 2 of my friends. It was an amazing time. Camper was really great - in a good condition, clean, comfortable. We did 1000km without any problems. I can recommend this car and Alvaro as a very nice owner.
