Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Molise

Molise — a region worth exploring

Molise is one of Italy's smallest and least-visited regions, yet it packs an extraordinary amount of character into its 4,438 square kilometres. The ancient Tratturi — livestock trails dating back over 3,000 years — crisscross the landscape and are now protected as cultural heritage routes, perfect for slow travel by campervan. From the Adriatic coastline at Termoli, with its striking Swabian Castle and medieval old town, to the snow-dusted peaks of the Mainarde mountains in the west, the distance is barely 120 km, meaning you can move from beach to summit in a single day. Isernia, one of the oldest cities in Italy, sits roughly 100 km inland from the coast and offers access to the Palaeolithic archaeological site of La Pineta. Further south, the Matese Regional Park provides lakes, beech forests and walking trails that feel wonderfully uncrowded. Along the coast, Campomarino Lido and Petacciato Marina offer long sandy beaches with easy motorhome access. Molise's compact size makes it ideal for a campervan trip — you can explore the entire region without long driving days, stopping at agriturismos and small-town festivals along the way. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Molise and neighbouring regions, choosing from a range of campervans and motorhomes that suit your group size and travel style. It is a region that rewards curiosity and unhurried exploration.

Best time to visit

The best time to hire a campervan in Molise runs from May to October, when warm weather opens up both the coast and the mountains. In August, the Sagra del Pesce in Termoli celebrates the town's fishing heritage with street food and live music right on the harbour. September brings the Ndocciata in Agnone — a spectacular torchlight procession through the streets, one of the oldest fire festivals in Europe. Summer is peak season along the Adriatic, so booking your Yescapa vehicle early gives you the widest choice and the best peer-to-peer rates. Spring and early autumn are quieter, with mild temperatures ideal for hiking in the Matese or driving the Tratturi routes without the crowds.

The best road trips in Molise

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Tratturi Route

350 km 5–8 days

Follow 350 km of ancient shepherd trails across Molise, from Campobasso south through Sepino's Roman ruins to Bojano. The route suits campervans well, with quiet roads and small-town stopovers offering local produce and warm hospitality. Allow 5–8 days to explore at a relaxed pace.

Wild Molise and the Mainarde

500 km 7–11 days

This 500 km loop heads west from Isernia into the Mainarde mountains, passing Castel San Vincenzo's lake and the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno. Continue through Agnone, famous for its bell foundry, before returning via Campobasso. Ideal for motorhomes — 7–11 days lets you enjoy mountain walks and hilltop villages.

The Adriatic Loop

200 km 3–6 days

A 200 km coastal circuit linking Termoli, Campomarino Lido and Petacciato Marina along Molise's Adriatic shore. Sandy beaches and seafood restaurants line the route, with well-equipped campervan stops near each town. Three to six days is plenty to soak up the seaside atmosphere.

Villages of the Matese

150 km 3–5 days

A compact 150 km route through the Matese Regional Park, visiting Guardiaregia, Bojano and the shores of Lago del Matese. Roads are narrow in places, so a smaller campervan works best. Allow 3–5 days to hike forest trails and discover quiet mountain villages.

The Grand Molise Tour

300 km 5–8 days

Cover 300 km in 5–8 days on a loop from Campobasso through Isernia, Venafro's Roman amphitheatre and the hilltop town of Trivento. This mid-length route gives a thorough taste of Molise's interior, with motorhome-friendly service areas along the main roads.

Molise in Depth

600 km 10–15 days

The ultimate 600 km journey across every corner of Molise, from the Adriatic coast at Termoli to the Mainarde peaks and back through the Matese. Over 10–15 days you can visit Sepino, Agnone and Pietrabbondante's Samnite theatre. Suits both campervans and motorhomes with varied terrain throughout.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Molise

Molise's main motorway is the A14 Adriatica, which runs along the coast and connects Termoli to the rest of Italy's toll network. Tolls are paid at booths by card or cash, and a Telepass device speeds things up if you plan to travel beyond the region. Inland roads are mostly single-carriageway state roads (SS) and provincial roads, well-maintained but often winding through hilly terrain. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on main roads and 100 km/h on motorways. Larger vehicles should take care on narrower mountain routes near the Mainarde and Matese, where passing places can be tight.

We had a great time in the motorhome. Jean Pierre was very friendly and professional. We were shown how everything works before setting off. We would definitely recommend hiring this vehicle. Jean Pierre only speaks French but with the aid of a translator app and his son it worked out absolutely fine. Thanks again Jean-Pierre.
