Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Limburg

Limburg — a region worth exploring

Limburg is the southernmost province of the Netherlands, where the landscape shifts from flat polders to rolling hills — the Vaalserberg, at 322.4 metres, marks the country's highest point. From Maastricht's Romanesque Basilica of Our Lady to the underground marlstone galleries of the Sint Pietersberg caves, the region packs centuries of history into a compact area. The distance from Maastricht to Roermond is roughly 65 km, while Valkenburg to Thorn — the famous "white village" — covers about 55 km, making day-to-day driving between stops relaxed and manageable. Limburg's Heuvelland, the only hilly terrain in the Netherlands, offers winding roads through orchards, vineyards and half-timbered farmsteads that feel more Burgundian than Dutch. You can cycle the former Simpelveld–Kerkrade railway line, explore the Meinweg National Park near the German border, or wander the medieval streets of Valkenburg with its castle ruins perched above town. For campervan travel, the province's gentle scale is a real advantage — short distances, well-maintained roads and plentiful service points mean you spend less time driving and more time exploring. Motorhome-friendly aires and campsites are spread right across Limburg, from the Maas river valley to the eastern moorlands. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners, so you can pick up a campervan close to your starting point and set off with insider tips already in hand.

Best time to visit

Late spring through early autumn is ideal for a campervan trip in Limburg. May and June bring warm days and quieter roads, perfect for exploring the Heuvelland hills before the summer rush. In August, the Preuvenemint food festival fills Maastricht's Vrijthof square with regional flavours — book your Yescapa motorhome early, as it is the busiest month. September and October reward you with vineyard harvests and golden foliage across the Geul valley. Limburg's campsites generally operate from April to October, and hiring outside peak July–August weeks often means better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer prices on Yescapa.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Limburg

Motorways in Limburg are toll-free, as the Netherlands does not charge road tolls for standard vehicles. The A2 runs north–south through the province, connecting Maastricht to Eindhoven, while the A76 and A79 link the Heuvelland area to the German border. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are 80 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on rural roads, lower than the 100–130 km/h car limits, so keep to the right-hand lane. Rest areas with service points appear regularly along the A2 and A76. Larger vehicles should note height restrictions in Maastricht's city-centre tunnels — check signage before entering.

Absolutely loved staying in Alfreds campervan. The decor was beautiful. It had everything we needed, a perfect space for two people for time in nature travelling. It was so good having a fridge on the road. He answered any questions I had and the pick up/ drop off was great. Would definitely love to rent it again in the future when we come back to Spain. Communication with Guillaume the owner was excellent. Always available to answer questions and give advice about travel destinations. The campervan was a perfect size for our first experience of this type of holiday. We used sites for our 7 night travel experience which worked well with electric/topping up water etc. Overall a great experience and would use this owner again.
