Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Lake Garda

Lake Garda — a region worth exploring

Lake Garda stretches 51.6 kilometres from the alpine foothills near Riva del Garda in the north to the gentle plains around Peschiera del Garda in the south, making it Italy's largest lake and one of the most rewarding destinations to explore by road. The western shore road, known as the Gardesana Occidentale, winds through dozens of tunnels carved into sheer rock between Gargnano and Limone sul Garda, offering dramatic views at every turn. On the eastern side, the medieval Scaliger Castle in Malcesine sits directly above the water, while the cable car to Monte Baldo (1,760 metres) reveals panoramic views across the entire lake. From Sirmione's Roman ruins at the Grotte di Catullo to the lemon houses of Limone sul Garda, the lake packs remarkable variety into a compact area — Sirmione to Riva del Garda is roughly 75 kilometres by road, and Malcesine to Bardolino just 25 kilometres along the eastern shore. The terrain around Lake Garda suits both campervans and motorhomes well, with flat, easy roads in the south and more winding mountain routes in the north that reward confident drivers. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based around the lake and across northern Italy, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your group size and travel style. It is a genuinely flexible way to discover every corner of this extraordinary lake.

Best time to visit

Lake Garda's season runs from April through to October, with each month offering something different. In June, the Festa dei Limoni in Limone sul Garda celebrates the town's citrus heritage, while September brings the Bardolino Grape and Wine Festival — a perfect excuse to explore the eastern shore's vineyards. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your campervan early on Yescapa gives you the best choice of vehicles from local owners at competitive peer-to-peer prices. Spring and early autumn are ideal for quieter lakeside drives and comfortable temperatures for walking and cycling around Lake Garda.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Lake Garda

Italy's motorways (autostrade) are toll roads, and around Lake Garda you will most likely use the A22 Brennero motorway or the A4 between Milan and Venice. You pay at toll booths by cash, card, or Telepass device. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed differently and pay higher tolls, so check your vehicle's weight before setting off. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes are 130 km/h on motorways and 110 km/h on dual carriageways; heavier vehicles are limited to 100 km/h and 80 km/h respectively. The Gardesana roads around the lake are narrow in places, particularly the tunnels on the western shore — take care with larger vehicles.
