Why hire a campervan or motorhome in La Rioja

La Rioja — a region worth exploring

La Rioja is home to over 500 wineries packed into Spain's smallest mainland region, making it one of the most concentrated wine-producing areas in the world. Despite covering just 5,045 square kilometres, this compact territory delivers an extraordinary variety of landscapes — from the snow-dusted peaks of the Sierra de la Demanda in the south to the fertile Ebro Valley stretching across its northern plains. The region's capital, Logroño, sits roughly 150 km from Bilbao and about 170 km from Zaragoza, placing La Rioja at a natural crossroads between the Basque Country, Navarre, and Castile and León. You can explore the Monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the earliest written records of the Spanish language were found, then drive south to the dramatic rock formations of the Enciso Dinosaur Route, where over 3,000 fossilised footprints are preserved in open-air sites. The medieval town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada lies along the Camino de Santiago, offering a fascinating stop rich in pilgrimage history. La Rioja's roads are well-suited to campervan and motorhome travel, with gentle valley routes and quieter mountain passes that rarely feel congested. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the region, giving you the flexibility to plan your own route and discover La Rioja at your own pace.

Best time to visit

La Rioja is a rewarding destination from spring through to autumn. May and June bring warm days ideal for exploring vineyards and the Sierra de la Demanda on foot or by campervan. September is harvest season — the Fiesta de la Vendimia in Logroño celebrates the grape harvest with tastings, parades, and traditional events. Autumn colours across the vine-covered hillsides make October a particularly scenic month for a motorhome trip. With Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside the peak summer months of July and August, thanks to flexible pricing set by individual owners. Book a few weeks ahead for September to secure the best choice of vehicles.

The best road trips in La Rioja

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Dinosaur Trail

120 km 3–5 days

This 120 km route loops through La Rioja's southern highlands, visiting the open-air fossil sites at Enciso and Munilla. You will find over 3,000 dinosaur footprints preserved in rock. The roads suit campervans well, with quiet lanes and small villages offering overnight stops.

Charming Villages of the Najerilla Valley

90 km 3–6 days

A gentle 90 km drive through La Rioja's Najerilla Valley, passing Nájera and Anguiano. Explore riverside walks, medieval bridges, and the famous stilt dancers' heritage. Ideal for a relaxed campervan trip of 3 to 6 days with well-spaced stopping points along the route.

The Grand Wine Route

200 km 5–8 days

Cover 200 km across La Rioja's finest wine country over 5 to 8 days. Start in Haro, visit the bodegas of Briones and the Vivanco Wine Museum, then continue to Laguardia. Roads are smooth and flat, making this route perfect for both motorhomes and campervans.

Sierras and Monasteries

350 km 5–8 days

This 350 km route through La Rioja links the UNESCO-listed Monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla with the Sierra de Cebollera Natural Park. Allow 5 to 8 days to enjoy mountain scenery, forest trails, and historic villages like Ezcaray. Motorhomes should check width on mountain sections.

La Rioja End to End

500 km 7–11 days

Spanning 500 km, this route crosses La Rioja from Alfaro in the east to Haro in the west, then south into the Sierra de la Demanda. Over 7 to 11 days, you pass through Calahorra, Logroño, and Nájera. A campervan gives you the freedom to stop at vineyards along the way.

The Grand Riojan Circuit and Beyond

600 km 10–15 days

At 600 km over 10 to 15 days, this extended loop takes in all of La Rioja's highlights — from Logroño's tapas streets to the dinosaur sites at Enciso and the wine town of Haro — before crossing briefly into neighbouring Navarre. Suits a well-equipped motorhome or campervan.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in La Rioja

La Rioja's main artery is the AP-68 motorway, a toll road running through the Ebro Valley and connecting Bilbao to Zaragoza. Tolls are paid at booths by card or cash. The free alternative, the N-232, follows a similar route and is well-suited to motorhomes. Speed limits for vehicles over 3,500 kg are generally 90 km/h on dual carriageways and 80 km/h on conventional roads. Mountain roads in the Sierra de la Demanda are narrower but well-maintained — take care on bends if you are driving a larger motorhome. Rest areas with parking suitable for campervans are dotted along the main routes.

We had a great time in the motorhome. Jean Pierre was very friendly and professional. We were shown how everything works before setting off. We would definitely recommend hiring this vehicle. Jean Pierre only speaks French but with the aid of a translator app and his son it worked out absolutely fine. Thanks again Jean-Pierre.
