Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Hesse

Hesse — a region worth exploring

Hesse is home to the Bergstraße, one of Germany's oldest tourist routes, stretching 80 km from Darmstadt to Heidelberg through orchards and vineyards that bloom as early as March. The region spans roughly 21,100 square kilometres in central Germany, offering a rewarding mix of forested uplands, river valleys and historic towns. From Frankfurt — Germany's fifth-largest city — to the medieval half-timbered streets of Marburg, the distance is just 95 km, making Hesse easy to explore at your own pace. Nature lovers can head to the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage beech forest surrounding the Edersee reservoir, while the Rheingau wine region along the Rhine offers gentle slopes and celebrated Riesling vineyards. Further north, the Rhön Biosphere Reserve rewards visitors with open moorland and panoramic hilltop views from the Wasserkuppe, Hesse's highest peak at 950 metres. The 170 km drive from Wiesbaden to Fulda crosses the heart of the region, linking spa towns, castle ruins and quiet campsite stops along the way. Whether you fancy a compact campervan for winding vineyard lanes or a spacious motorhome for longer family tours, Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across Hesse, so you can pick up your vehicle close to where your adventure begins and enjoy the flexibility of peer-to-peer hire.

Best time to visit

May to October is ideal for a campervan trip through Hesse, with long daylight hours and mild temperatures perfect for outdoor exploring. The Rheingau Wine Festival in Wiesbaden each August celebrates the region's Riesling heritage with tastings and live music, while the Hessentag — a major state festival held in a different Hesse town each June — showcases local culture and traditions. Spring brings early blossoms along the Bergstraße, and autumn rewards with golden forests in the Taunus hills. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer months often means better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer prices from local owners.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Hesse

Germany's motorways are toll-free for cars and motorhomes under 7.5 tonnes, so you can travel Hesse's Autobahn network — including the A5, A3 and A7 — without paying any tolls. While many stretches have no general speed limit for cars, motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on rural roads. Vehicles under 3.5 tonnes follow standard car limits where posted. Hesse's motorway service areas are well spaced and often include dedicated parking bays for larger vehicles. Keep an eye out for low-emission zones (Umweltzonen) in Frankfurt and other cities — you will need a green environmental sticker to enter.
