Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Great Ocean Road

Great Ocean Road — a region worth exploring

The Great Ocean Road stretches 243 kilometres along Victoria's south-western coast, making it one of the longest war memorials in the world — built by returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932. From Torquay to Allansford, the route threads past the iconic Twelve Apostles limestone stacks, the lush rainforest canopy of the Otway National Park, and the surf breaks of Bells Beach, where the annual Rip Curl Pro draws competitors from across the globe. Torquay to Apollo Bay covers roughly 115 kilometres of winding coastal road, while Apollo Bay to Port Campbell adds another 95 kilometres through some of the most dramatic cliff scenery in Australia. Inland detours lead to thundering waterfalls such as Hopetoun Falls and Triplet Falls, both tucked within the Great Otway National Park's towering mountain ash forests. The road itself is well-sealed but features tight bends and occasional single-lane sections, so choosing the right vehicle matters. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across Victoria, giving you the flexibility to pick up near Melbourne and head straight for the coast. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for the tighter curves or a larger motorhome for extended touring, the peer-to-peer model means more choice and often better value than traditional hire outlets.

Best time to visit

The Great Ocean Road is enjoyable year-round, though December to February brings warm days ideal for surfing at Bells Beach and coastal walks near Lorne. June through August is whale-watching season, when southern right whales and humpbacks pass close to Warrnambool's Logan's Beach — a remarkable experience from a campervan parked nearby. Book your Yescapa motorhome well ahead for the summer school holidays in January, the busiest period along the route. Autumn, from March to May, offers mild temperatures and quieter roads, perfect for exploring the Otway rainforest trails without the crowds.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
