Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Gelderland

Gelderland — a region worth exploring

Gelderland is the largest province in the Netherlands by land area, stretching across 5,136 square kilometres from the sandy heathlands of the Veluwe to the wide river floodplains of the Rhine and Waal. The Hoge Veluwe National Park alone covers 55 square kilometres and is home to the Kröller-Müller Museum, which houses the second-largest collection of Van Gogh paintings in the world. From Arnhem to Nijmegen — the oldest city in the Netherlands, founded by the Romans around 19 BC — the distance is just 20 km, yet the landscape shifts dramatically from wooded hills to open river meadows. Head east and you reach the Achterhoek, a patchwork of small farms, hedgerows and winding lanes ideal for slow-paced campervan touring. Further north, the former Hanseatic towns of Zutphen, Deventer and Harderwijk line the banks of the IJssel, connected by roughly 80 km of scenic riverside roads. Gelderland's terrain is remarkably varied for a Dutch province — rolling moraines left by Ice Age glaciers, dense pine and oak forests, and fertile orchards in the Betuwe region that burst into blossom each spring. This diversity makes it a rewarding destination for both campervan and motorhome travel, with quiet back roads and well-maintained provincial routes throughout. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based across Gelderland, choosing from compact campervans to spacious motorhomes that suit your group and your route perfectly.

Best time to visit

Late April through September is the prime window for exploring Gelderland by campervan. In late April, the Betuwe orchards flower spectacularly, and the Fruitcorso parade in Tiel — usually held on the second Saturday of September — celebrates the region's fruit-growing heritage with elaborate floats. Summer brings long daylight hours and full access to campsites across the Veluwe and along the rivers. Booking through Yescapa during spring or early autumn often means more competitive hire prices from local owners, as demand is lighter outside the July–August peak. Campsites in Gelderland generally open from March to October, giving you a generous season to plan your motorhome trip.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Gelderland

Motorways in the Netherlands are toll-free, so you can travel across Gelderland without any road charges. The A1, A12, A28 and A50 are the main motorways crossing the province, all well-maintained with regular service areas. The national speed limit on motorways is 100 km/h during the day (06:00–19:00) and 120 or 130 km/h at night, but vehicles over 3,500 kg — which includes many motorhomes — are limited to 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on other roads. Keep an eye out for electronic signs that may lower limits further. Provincial roads through the Veluwe and Achterhoek are generally smooth and well-signposted, though some narrower lanes require careful manoeuvring in larger vehicles.

We had a great time in the motorhome. Jean Pierre was very friendly and professional. We were shown how everything works before setting off. We would definitely recommend hiring this vehicle. Jean Pierre only speaks French but with the aid of a translator app and his son it worked out absolutely fine. Thanks again Jean-Pierre.

We hired this camper Asier for our family holiday through Spain and France, what a great van it is with everything you need. Asier is very friendly and helpful even though there was a language barrier. We would definitely use again if we needed to.
