Why choose Geelong for your road trip

Geelong — a city worth exploring

Geelong's waterfront stretches over 4 km along Corio Bay, making it the longest promenade of any regional city in Australia. Once a wool-trading hub, the city has reinvented itself with a thriving arts and food scene that rewards slow exploration. The Geelong Gallery houses over 6,000 works, including a celebrated collection of Australian paintings from the colonial era. Along the Eastern Beach foreshore, the Art Deco bathing pavilion and sea pool offer a distinctive backdrop for a morning swim. For families, the Geelong Carousel — a beautifully restored steam-driven ride from the early 1900s — sits right on the waterfront. The National Wool Museum, set inside a grand bluestone warehouse, tells the story of the region's pastoral heritage. Melbourne lies just 75 km to the north-east, while the surf town of Torquay is only 21 km to the south, opening the door to the Great Ocean Road. The terrain around Geelong is flat and well-suited to larger vehicles, with wide roads and generous parking bays throughout the city centre. Heading west, the Bellarine Peninsula offers gentle coastal driving with plenty of cellar doors and seaside villages. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner, giving you the freedom to set your own pace and benefit from insider tips on the best spots to park up and explore the region.

Best time to visit

Geelong enjoys warm, settled weather from November through March, ideal for waterfront walks and coastal drives. The Royal Geelong Show takes place each October, bringing agricultural displays and carnival rides to the showgrounds. In January, the Pako Festa transforms Pakington Street into a multicultural street party with live music and food stalls. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your campervan through Yescapa ahead of time helps you lock in competitive peer-to-peer rates. Autumn, from March to May, brings quieter campsites and golden light along the Bellarine Peninsula — a great window for a relaxed motorhome trip without the holiday crowds.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
