Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Galicia

Galicia — a region worth exploring

Galicia's coastline stretches over 1,500 kilometres, making it the longest of any region in Spain and one of the most varied in all of Europe. From the towering Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela — the endpoint of the famous Camino de Santiago — to the wild granite cliffs of Costa da Morte, this north-western corner of the Iberian Peninsula rewards slow, curious travel. The drive from A Coruña to Vigo covers roughly 155 km along the Atlantic coast, while heading inland from Lugo to Ourense is around 100 km through river valleys and terraced vineyards of the Ribeira Sacra. Galicia's Rías Baixas — four dramatic fjord-like inlets — are ideal for parking up and sampling freshly caught seafood at harbourside markets. Further north, the Fragas do Eume natural park protects one of the last Atlantic coastal forests in Europe, best explored on foot from a nearby campervan pitch. Roads here wind through green hills and fishing villages, with plenty of well-signed aires and campsites suited to both campervans and larger motorhomes. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Galicia, choosing from a wide range of vehicles based in cities like Santiago, Vigo, and A Coruña — a flexible, peer-to-peer way to discover a region where every estuary hides another reason to stay a little longer.

Best time to visit

Galicia is a year-round destination, though May to October offers the driest weather and longest daylight hours for coastal drives. The Festa de San Xoán in June lights up beaches across Galicia with bonfires and celebrations, while the Festa do Marisco in O Grove each October is a must for seafood lovers. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your campervan early on Yescapa gives you the widest choice of vehicles from local owners at competitive peer-to-peer prices. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and mild temperatures — perfect for exploring Galicia's inland valleys and vineyards without the crowds.

The best road trips in Galicia

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Rías Baixas Coastal Route

180 km 3–6 days

This 180 km route traces Galicia's four famous estuaries from Muros to Baiona. Stop in Cambados for Albariño wine and Illa de Arousa for sheltered beaches. Campervan-friendly aires dot the coast, and the gentle roads suit all vehicle sizes.

The Camino on Wheels

220 km 3–6 days

Follow 220 km of the Camino de Santiago's final stages by road, from Sarria through Portomarín and Arzúa to Santiago de Compostela. Galicia's lush interior unfolds along quiet N-roads, with campsites near each historic town — ideal for a motorhome at a relaxed pace.

Complete Galicia — Coast and Interior

650 km 10–15 days

A 650 km grand loop linking A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, and Vigo before returning up the Atlantic coast. You'll cross the Ribeira Sacra gorges, sample Galicia's thermal springs, and finish along the Rías Altas. Allow 10–15 days in a campervan or motorhome to do it justice.

Discovering the Costa da Morte

350 km 5–8 days

This 350 km route explores Galicia's rugged 'Coast of Death' from Malpica to Fisterra, then loops inland via Carballo. Visit the lighthouse at Cabo Vilán and the wild beach at Praia de Trece. Narrower roads suit campervans best; plenty of free aires along the way.

Ribeira Sacra and Ourense Circuit

400 km 5–8 days

Cover 400 km through Galicia's wine-growing heartland. Start in Ourense, soak in the hot springs at Outariz, then wind through the Sil Canyon's terraced vineyards to Monforte de Lemos. Roads are well-maintained but winding — a compact campervan is your best bet.

The Grand Galician Coastal Tour

550 km 7–11 days

A 550 km route hugging Galicia's entire northern and western seaboard from Ribadeo's Praia das Catedrais to Vigo. Pass through Viveiro, Ferrol, and A Coruña, with motorhome service areas at regular intervals. Allow 7–11 days to enjoy the fishing villages and clifftop walks.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Galicia

Galicia's main motorways — the AP-9 linking Ferrol, A Coruña, Santiago, and Vigo, and the AG-55 to Costa da Morte — are toll roads. You can pay at booths with cash or card, and a Via-T electronic tag speeds things up. Motorhomes over 3,500 kg are classed in a higher toll bracket, so check your vehicle's weight before setting off. The general speed limit on motorways for vehicles over 3,500 kg is 90 km/h, while lighter campervans may travel at up to 120 km/h. Many secondary roads (N- and LC- routes) are toll-free and offer scenic alternatives along the coast and through river valleys, with regular rest areas and fuel stops.

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.

Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.

We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.
