Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia — a region worth exploring

Friuli-Venezia Giulia sits at Italy's north-eastern corner, where the Alps meet the Adriatic Sea across just 7,858 square kilometres — making it one of the country's smallest yet most geographically diverse regions. From the port city of Trieste, perched on the Slovenian border, to the mountain village of Sauris at over 1,000 metres above sea level, you can cross the entire region in under two hours by road (roughly 170 km). The Tagliamento, one of the last free-flowing rivers in the Alps, winds through the heart of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, while the lagoon of Grado and the golden sands of Lignano Sabbiadoro stretch along the coast. Inland, the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park offers dramatic limestone peaks and forested valleys, and the medieval town of Cividale del Friuli — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — rewards you with Lombard-era temples and a striking Devil's Bridge. Wine lovers can explore the Collio hills near Gorizia, where white grape varieties like Friulano and Ribolla Gialla thrive on sun-drenched slopes. The distance from Udine, the regional capital, to the alpine border town of Tarvisio is around 100 km, opening up easy access to Austria and Slovenia. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Friuli-Venezia Giulia, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit everything from coastal weekends to alpine adventures.

Best time to visit

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring warm days ideal for driving through the Collio vineyards or along the Adriatic coast, while the Barcolana regatta in Trieste each October draws thousands and fills the gulf with sails. Summer is perfect for seaside stops at Lignano Sabbiadoro and Grado, with campsites fully open and long daylight hours for exploring. Book early for July and August — it is the most popular season. Shoulder months like September offer quieter roads and harvest festivals across the wine country. With Yescapa, you benefit from peer-to-peer pricing, often finding better rates on campervan hire outside peak weeks.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia's motorway network includes the A4 (linking Venice to Trieste) and the A23 (heading north from Udine towards Austria via Tarvisio). Tolls apply on these routes and you pay at booths by cash, card, or Telepass. Motorhomes and campervans over 3.5 tonnes are classed as heavy vehicles, with lower speed limits of 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on dual carriageways. Rest areas with dedicated larger-vehicle parking appear regularly along the A4. Mountain roads towards the Friulian Dolomites and Sauris can be narrow and winding, so a compact campervan is often the more comfortable choice for alpine passes.

We had a great time in the motorhome. Jean Pierre was very friendly and professional. We were shown how everything works before setting off. We would definitely recommend hiring this vehicle. Jean Pierre only speaks French but with the aid of a translator app and his son it worked out absolutely fine. Thanks again Jean-Pierre.

We hired this camper Asier for our family holiday through Spain and France, what a great van it is with everything you need. Asier is very friendly and helpful even though there was a language barrier. We would definitely use again if we needed to.
