Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Friesland

Friesland — a region worth exploring

Friesland is the only Dutch province with its own officially recognised language — West Frisian — spoken by roughly 350,000 people alongside Dutch. Stretching from the Wadden Sea coast in the north to a chain of freshwater lakes in the south, the province covers a landscape shaped by water, wind and centuries of land reclamation. The Elfstedentocht, a legendary 200-kilometre ice-skating race linking eleven Frisian cities, has defined local identity since 1909 and draws global attention whenever conditions allow it to be held. From Leeuwarden, the provincial capital and a former European Capital of Culture, to the historic harbour town of Harlingen is just 28 km — yet the scenery shifts from urban canals to open polder farmland in minutes. Head 55 km south-east and you reach Heerenveen, gateway to the Frisian lake district around Tjeukemeer and Sneekermeer, where waterways connect villages that are otherwise only accessible by boat. The Wadden Islands of Terschelling and Ameland sit off the northern coast, reachable by ferry and ideal for a few days of cycling, birdwatching and wide sandy beaches. Friesland's flat terrain and well-maintained roads make it wonderfully suited to campervan and motorhome travel, with plenty of compact pitches designed for smaller vehicles and spacious sites that welcome larger rigs. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the province, choosing from a range of campervans and motorhomes that match your group size and travel style — a peer-to-peer approach that keeps costs fair and puts regional knowledge at your fingertips.

Best time to visit

Friesland is at its liveliest between May and September, when long daylight hours open up the lakes and coastline for sailing, cycling and island hopping. June hosts the renowned Oerol Festival on Terschelling, a ten-day celebration of theatre, music and art set across the island's landscapes. In August, the Sneekweek regatta transforms Sneek into a buzzing sailing hub for an entire week. Campsites across Friesland are fully operational from April through October, with the widest choice of pitches available in early summer before the school holidays begin. Through Yescapa, you can often find better rates on campervan and motorhome hire outside peak July–August weeks, thanks to flexible pricing set by individual owners.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Friesland

Friesland's main motorway, the A7, runs east–west and connects the province to Groningen and North Holland, while the A32 links Leeuwarden to Heerenveen and the south. Dutch motorways are toll-free, so you can travel freely without vignettes or road charges. The national speed limit on motorways is 100 km/h during the day (06:00–19:00) and 130 km/h at night, though motorhomes over 3,500 kg are limited to 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on regional roads. Friesland's secondary roads are generally flat and well-surfaced, but some rural dyke roads are narrow — take care with wider vehicles.

Absolutely loved staying in Alfreds campervan. The decor was beautiful. It had everything we needed, a perfect space for two people for time in nature travelling. It was so good having a fridge on the road. He answered any questions I had and the pick up/ drop off was great. Would definitely love to rent it again in the future when we come back to Spain. Communication with Guillaume the owner was excellent. Always available to answer questions and give advice about travel destinations. The campervan was a perfect size for our first experience of this type of holiday. We used sites for our 7 night travel experience which worked well with electric/topping up water etc. Overall a great experience and would use this owner again.
