Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Flanders

Flanders — a region worth exploring

Flanders stretches across 67 kilometres of North Sea coastline — the entire Belgian coast — making it one of Europe's most compact yet rewarding regions for a road trip. From the medieval belfry of Bruges, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the bustling diamond district of Antwerp, roughly 100 km apart, Flanders packs centuries of history into a remarkably small area. You can drive from Ghent's Gravensteen castle to the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres in just 65 km, passing through flat polder landscapes ideal for campervans and motorhomes alike. The region's network of well-maintained roads and gentle terrain means you won't face steep gradients or tight mountain passes, so even larger vehicles handle the routes with ease. Flanders is also home to a thriving food culture — think Trappist breweries in Westmalle, chocolate shops in Brussels' neighbouring towns, and frituren (chip stands) on practically every corner. Art lovers can trace the Flemish Masters from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp to the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, while nature enthusiasts will find peaceful cycling paths along the Scheldt estuary. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Flanders, giving you the flexibility to collect your vehicle in Antwerp, Ghent, or smaller towns and set off at your own pace.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for exploring Flanders by campervan, with long daylight hours and comfortable temperatures for outdoor sightseeing. The Gentse Feesten in July transforms Ghent into a ten-day open-air festival of music, theatre, and street food — well worth planning your trip around. Autumn brings the Flanders Film Festival in October and quieter roads across the region. Through Yescapa, you can often find more competitive hire rates outside the peak summer months, thanks to flexible pricing set by individual owners. Booking a motorhome in spring lets you enjoy Hallerbos bluebell forest near Halle at its most spectacular, typically in mid-April.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Flanders

Motorways in Flanders are toll-free, so you can travel the E40, E17, and E19 without any charges. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 90 km/h on motorways and 60 km/h in built-up areas — always check your vehicle's weight class before setting off. Flanders' motorway network is famously well-lit at night, and rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles appear at regular intervals. Low-emission zones (LEZ) operate in Antwerp, Ghent, and Brussels, requiring registration for older vehicles. Road signage is in Dutch only, so a sat-nav set to your language is a practical addition.
