Why choose Chicago for your road trip

Chicago — a city worth exploring

Chicago's iconic skyline stretches along 42 km of Lake Michigan shoreline, making it the only major American city where freshwater beaches sit right beside towering architecture. From the Art Institute of Chicago, home to over 300,000 works including Grant Wood's American Gothic, to the sprawling Millennium Park with its famous Cloud Gate sculpture, the city rewards curious travellers at every turn. Navy Pier juts out into the lake with its 46-metre Centennial Wheel, while the Willis Tower Skydeck offers views across four states from 412 metres up. Head south-east and you reach Indiana Dunes National Park in roughly 80 km, where sand dunes meet woodland trails ideal for a weekend escape. Drive 148 km north and you arrive in Milwaukee, a lakeside city known for its brewing heritage and vibrant arts scene. Chicago's wide boulevards and well-maintained expressways make it a comfortable base for exploring by motorhome or campervan, with plenty of space to navigate even larger vehicles. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the Chicago area, giving you the flexibility to collect your vehicle close to where you need it and set off on your own schedule. It is a practical, personal way to discover the Midwest.

Best time to visit

Chicago comes alive between May and October, when warm weather opens up lakefront parks and outdoor festivals. The Taste of Chicago food festival in July draws crowds to Grant Park, while the Chicago Air and Water Show in August fills the shoreline with spectators. Booking your campervan or motorhome early for summer ensures the widest choice of vehicles. Autumn brings comfortable driving temperatures and quieter campsites, making September and October ideal for a more relaxed trip. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means better value outside peak weekends, so consider a mid-week hire for the best deals.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a larger vehicle in Chicago requires a bit of planning, but several garages and lots in the city centre accommodate oversized vehicles. Street parking for motorhomes and campervans is restricted in many downtown areas, and overnight parking on public roads is generally not permitted. Always check posted height and length limits before entering a garage. For overnight stays, head to a campsite outside the city rather than attempting to park up in town.

  • Millennium Park Garage, Adjacent to the city — Underground garage beneath Millennium Park on Columbus Drive. Height clearance of around 2.1 m suits smaller campervans only. Central location for exploring the Loop and lakefront.
  • Navy Pier Parking, 2km northeast — Large surface and garage parking at Navy Pier with sections for oversized vehicles. Convenient for lakefront attractions and the Centennial Wheel. Check seasonal rates online before arriving.
  • Soldier Field South Lot, 3km south — Open-air lot south of Soldier Field with generous space for larger motorhomes on non-event days. Close to the Museum Campus and Field Museum. Confirm availability during Bears game days.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.

We hired Trina for 5 nights earlier this July. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the island. Jandro was incredibly helpful, always on hand before and during the trip to answer any questions which really helped us navigate the island and enjoy our trip. The vehicle was fantastic, an incredible experience to drive. All the amenities were brilliant as well. I would highly recommend using Jandro and one of his vans for a fantastic Mallorca experience!

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.

Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.

We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
