Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Calgary Airport

Calgary Airport — a region worth exploring

Calgary International Airport (YYC) handles over 18 million passengers each year, making it the fourth-busiest airport in Canada and the main gateway to the Canadian Rockies. Situated just 17 km northeast of Calgary's city centre, it offers a convenient starting point for exploring Alberta's vast landscapes by road. From here, the drive west to Banff National Park covers roughly 130 km along the Trans-Canada Highway, while heading south to the UNESCO-listed Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump near Fort Macleod is about 165 km. The surrounding prairies give way to foothills and then towering peaks, creating an ever-changing backdrop as you travel. Lake Louise, Drumheller's Royal Tyrrell Museum, and Waterton Lakes National Park are all within a day's drive, each offering a completely different experience — from turquoise glacial waters to dinosaur fossils and wildflower-filled alpine meadows. Calgary itself is home to the world-famous Calgary Stampede, and the city's vibrant food scene along Stephen Avenue Walk is well worth a stop before you set off. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across Alberta, so you can find the right vehicle for your group and hit the road from the airport area without delay. Whether you fancy a compact campervan for mountain passes or a larger motorhome for a family adventure, the peer-to-peer model means more choice and often better value than traditional hire.

Best time to visit

The best time to hire a campervan from Calgary is between June and September, when daytime temperatures sit comfortably between 15 °C and 25 °C and mountain roads, including the Icefields Parkway, are fully open. July brings the Calgary Stampede, a ten-day rodeo and festival that draws visitors from around the globe, while September's Canmore Highland Games celebrate the region's Scottish heritage against a Rocky Mountain backdrop. Campsite pitches across Banff and Jasper fill quickly in July and August, so booking your Yescapa motorhome early gives you the flexibility to secure prime spots. Shoulder months like May and October can offer quieter roads and competitive hire rates through peer-to-peer owners.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Calgary Airport

Alberta's major highways are toll-free, so you can travel freely without worrying about passes or transponders. The Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) is the main east–west route from Calgary into the Rockies, while Highway 2 connects Calgary to Edmonton in the north and Lethbridge in the south. Speed limits for motorhomes and campervans generally match standard vehicles at 110 km/h on divided highways and 100 km/h on undivided routes, though always check posted signs. Mountain sections west of Calgary feature steep grades and lower speed advisory signs — use lower gears on descents. Rest areas with free parking are well spaced along major corridors.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
