What you need to know about roads and motorways in Calanques
Most roads around the Calanques are toll-free local routes, though the A50 motorway connecting Marseille to Toulon via Aubagne and La Ciotat does carry tolls — payable by card or cash at booths. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as Category 2 vehicles and pay a higher rate. The French speed limit for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on motorways is 110 km/h (90 km/h on dual carriageways). The D559 coast road and the Route des Crêtes between Cassis and La Ciotat are scenic but narrow in places, so take care with wider vehicles. Rest areas along the A50 are well spaced and several accommodate larger motorhomes.
